I am a first timer ready to build my first computer from scratch. After doing my research on processors I think that I am going to go with the Athlon 2600+. It looks like the most economic decision. Could anyone suggest a good, reasonaly priced mobo to go with the processor. The computer will be used as a reciever and a tuner and some light gaming

Thank You

You will get alot of differing opinions, most of which will match what people are currently using, but here goes,

The 3 most recommeded seem to be in 3 price ranges:
Shuttle AN35-Ultra ~$64
Abit NF7-S ~100
DFI LANPARTY NFII ULTRA B ~145

They all have the same chipset, however the Shuttle does not have Soundstorm audio, sata, or firewire, and all 3 are good boards. You should stick with a reputable manufacturer, and for Athlon XP, imho the NForce 2 boards are the best.

For under $100 shipped you can get the DFI NFII Ultra Infinity - basically the same board as the LanParty series except no neon parts/carrying strap and a couple other items. Performance and features are essentially identical. GREAT BOARD!

As a first time builder, I recommend you read the motherboard manual before you start building. You can download them off the manufacturer's website while waiting for your board to arrive. The better boards usually have a more detailed manual. If you rush your first build, you may not get the board to post the first time, and think you have a bad board. I've never had a board arrive doa, even refurbished ones.
