I was thinking

socket 939 nforce 3mobo probably the gigabit ultra
939 athlon64 3500+
1 gig (2x512) 3200ddr low latency
geforce6800 gt 256mb (saw best deal on the saphire one)agp 8x (not too impressed with pci-e yet)

lian li small server size case with window (I know this is alot of cash, but I cant see needing to replace this beast in the future.)

160-200gb sata hd7200 speed (i have seen probs with people installing o/s on sata.. will this be a problem for me?)

dvd +- r/w drive

3.5"floppy (may only be used during build, but cant see way around needing this? (am i missing something?)

I know I didnt post brand names etc.. I am thinking this through and havent gotten quite that far. This is where your ideas come in, this is my first build from scratch and need some insight.

Thanks.

Edit- I realize I could go nforce4- and pci-e , I really do. I just dont know why I would at this point. Oh and when i say gaming I mean like Asherons call , or WoW.. not fps.

Seems like more than enough. For your needs I would probably stay off bleeding edge and save some cash. People often have troubles w/SATA when they don't install drivers during OS installation. ...G

Melchior, why should I try PCI-E?

I know what pci-e is capable of, and we have heard things that are in the works, but foregoing sli, whay in the heck would I want it?

AGP8x seems to be as strong in current benchmarks, and for the games and apps I run is more than sufficient.

Lets say in a year I want pci-e ok I buy a mobo and card for 600$... I can still use all of my other components. My question is, whats gonna happen in a year thats going to make me say, geez this 256mb gt 6800 pro is a piece of crap.... It wont play WoW anymore and I need to go pci...

I am using 939 socket because I believe I will be using 939 socket for at least four years. AMD seems dedicated, but as far as pci-e Ive seen all the benchmarks on SLI , and yeah they are impressive but seems a waste to buy two gfx cards, when one of them delivers 90% of the performance two are capable of.

I dont see agp dying in the next two to three years, I see them becoming cheaper... Ill dive onto the pci-e bandwagon when they are doubling my performance, not while they are mildly enhancing it.

Full time troll, when I am off work there is about six message boards, seven now including this one I check periodically.

In other message boards, mostly gaming ones, I have been a grump so named a troll.

Thx for your inquiry.

The term "Troll" refers to a bad trader or a user who posts alot of cr*p. I think you mean "Lurker".

As for PCI-express, I assumed if your spending 2k, you'd want the best performance (well for some games anyway) and go SLI. But if not, your argument is valid. But if you want to upgrade your graphics card in the future, youll need a new board, as I doubt new cores will come out in AGP flavor. (or might take alooong time).

Either way, since your budget is good, I think you should go all the way. For most people, staying with AGP is mostly because of money.

I guess it depends on what message board you come from, but I have never been a bad trader or the other thing you listed.

LOL

Guess I need to stop using the word troll here :) !!

Thanks for reply.

I agree about the agp / pci thing I may need to do some rethinking.
