I'm finally building my first PC now my exams are over, I have a friend coming over to make sure I don't screw anything up, but I need some advice on the parts.
1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
General use + gaming
2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
£1000 but preferably less as I just spent more than I should have on a guitar...
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
UK
4. IF you're buying parts OUTSIDE the US, please post a link to the vendor you'll be buying from.
Preferably overclockers/scan
5. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.
Going to be going with an intel cpu, and I've got a specific nvidia GPU in mind, apart from that I don't mind really, that's what I'm looking for advice on!
6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
I can re-use a DvD drive, 1 monitor, mouse, keyboard and speakers but that's about it.
7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
I'm going to overclock, but only a bit because I've not done it before and I'm not sure taking risks/experimenting would be the best idea.
8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?
Two or three 1920x1080 monitors, but I'm only going to play games on one of them. I have to factor 1 monitor at like £150 into my budget.
9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
As soon as I know what parts to get
X. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?
Nope
I should add I've got my eyes on a GTX 770 in particular, and I really would like to get an SSD that can fit windows 7 + a couple of games.
The main questions I have about which parts to get are:
- Which CPU? (and so which motherboard to go with it). I know Haswell's just been released, but they're selling the ivy bridge ones at £150 on Overclockers, vs the £190 Haswell versions.
- How much RAM do I need? I noticed that 16GB costs significantly more than 8, and I'm not sure if I'll need more than 8? I also have no idea which brands are considered reliable.
- The GPU I'm looking at has only 2GB vram, and I see endless discussions talking about whether 2GB is enough for certain games with AA on. My main worry is that if I buy an i5 over an i7, and a video card with 2GB vram, in like a years time games will be using more than 4 cores and 2GBvram.
Thanks for any responses!
