Hi everyone,
I have been looking thru this forum for over 3 months now and am very impressed with all the
great knowledge you guys provide and it
has given me the urge to build a new computer. I have never attempted this before (but am very confident and capable)
as I have always purchased our computers from Dell and thought it is time to replace the oldest one which is 7 yrs old, Dell Dimension 4700 Pentium 4 530, 3GHz.
So I am seriously considering these components
but wondering if it's all compatible and would welcome suggestions. Will be purchasing this week.
Some parts will be purchased from Newegg and some from Microcenter which is about a 35 min drive.
$1100 budget or less.

CPU: SB i5 2500K Microcenter $179.99

MB: ASUS P8P67 PRO LGA 1155 or GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD4 LGA 1155 MC if combo deal returns this week

Case: Antec 300

Hard Drive: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB 7200 RPM

Solid State: OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE60G 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC

Memory: CORSAIR XMS3 DDR3 1333 4GB (2 x 2GB)
or
G.SKILL Ripjaws 4GB (2 x 2GB) 1333

Video: EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 SE 1024MB GDDR5

PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W

Optical: Asus DVD

OS: Win7 Home Premium 64 bit

Will use current monitor Dell ST2210, Logitech keyboard & wireless mouse

Still not to sure on which motherboard to get.
I do kind of like the Asus bios over Gigabyte.

Is the Asus Pro any better than the Gigabyte P67A-UD4?
It seems like people are having problems with the Asus
boards but looks like it's just a bios upgrade?
Does one offer better components than the other?
Is one board giving me more features for my money?
Any comments and help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

From one newb to another...nice looking build!

Can you afford to go GTX 570?

I could but don't really want to go that much.
Would I have problems with the GTX SE 460?
Really not into heavy gaming (but not ruling it out)

Then looks like a great build...that micro center CPU price is GREAT!

Also save a little money and get the UD3 version of the motherboard...

They still have them in stock at that price?

With an $1100 budget I'd go 8GB (2x4GB). What will this PC be used for?

And the Pro probably isn't worth it over the vanilla P8P67, unless the combo discount negates the difference.

The Samsung F3 1TB (after promo code) is currently the same price as the 500GB model.

The Gigabyte -UD3 mobo Anomaly1964 suggested sounds good.

650W is rather unnecessary, but as long as you're getting it for a good price, that's fine.

Other than that, the build looks good.

There's a 6850 for $143 AR from Mwave.
Look in Hot Deals.

But I'd go for a UD3 and 6950.

Antec Earthwatts 650W is $65, no rebate required; unlike the $70 AR Corsair.

I am waiting to see if MC brings their combo back tomorrow. Last week they had good deals.
From what i've been reading 4gb should be plenty and that most people will never use 8gb, or was i misinterpreting that?

PC will be for everyday use
web, ms office, dvd backup ect. maybe some gaming but nothing graphic intense.
Mainly want to upgrade to todays technology and speed, this one is 7 years old.

Are you looking to max out your budget or just get a decent machine for a cheap price?

P8P67 Pro plus GTX 460 SE? No, just no.

The SE is the bastard child of the GTX 460 family which shouldn't even be called a GTX 460 because they chopped a bunch of the shaders off. Get the UD3 and Ripjaws and use the savings to step up to a real GTX 460 1GB. Also, the 650W PSU is rather unnecessary as blackmage pointed out. A quality 550W will be fine.

If you want to over clock this card is known to reach 1ghz on the core clock once OC'd. If you just want a cheap card however this one will be fine.

The $200 5870 is back. Get that!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-883-_-Product

Promo: VGAJDKLS

But everything else looks very nice.

Even though I'm not a big fan of Sapphire, that's a pretty good deal.
OP, I have that EVGA card that you're considering. I'm happy with it...but at about the same price point, the 5870 will kick its ass in most categories. (although in some categories, only slightly)

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/162?vs=180

(The superclocked version should do slightly better than in that benchmark.)

BTW, if you decide to go with the EVGA 460, get this one instead:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130566

Slightly better price and it gets a nice boost from the EVGA "Free Performance Boost" being offered at EVGA.

Thanks,
That card looks like a good deal but will it fit in a Antec 300 case?
I went to the Sapphire web site but could not find any info as to
how big it is. It looks hugh.

The 300 can handle long cards, so you shouldn't have trouble. $200 is a ridiculously good price on 5870, so make sure that you jump on it!

Thanks, I just couldn't find any info on dimensions.
Think I am going to order my components tonite including the 5870, just a little worried now about memory. It sounds like a lot of people are having problems with heat sink fans interfering with the memory sticks and end up losing the ram slot nearest the heat sink leaving only 2 available slots.

That is an issue. You can always get the memory without heatspreaders. The performance is the same.
