First time build. Any suggestions?

Its my first time build. I just wanted some suggestions on the parts I have chosen. So far, I think I will go with the following:

Case: Aspire X-Cruise: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811144153

Or:

Sunbeam Trio: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811166008

MOBO: Asus A8N SLI: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131524

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Toledo Core: http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=A64-38CDBX

RAM: Patriot 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820220040

HDD: HITACHI Deskstar 7K80 80GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822145082

PSU: Thermaltake TR2 W0070 430W Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153023

GPU: will be running an old Geforce MX200, 32 MB until I get more cash.

Im not too sure on the PSU, HDD, or the RAM. I just know I should spend more on the PSU, but my budget is about limited to the combined prices of these parts. Also, which is better SATA 3.0 GB/s or SATA 150? Thanks for looking.

Neither of those cases are very good. Look at the Antec P160 with the window side pannel or the Antec Super Lanboy.

Mobo and CPU are both good.

For RAM, I reccomend OCZ or Corsair XMS of the same capacity.

The Hard Drive, Go with a Western Digital or Seagate with 16MB cache.

The Power Supply, get the Fortron AX500-A. I own one and I love it.

SATA - technically SATA 3.0GB/s is better, but hard drives, IIRC, dont even fully utilize SATA150, so it doesnt really matter

Unless you're planning on doing some seriously intensive computer stuff, you might want to go with a 3200+ Venice core. The 3800+ is basically just two 3200+ Venice cores in one. I know because I just made the upgrade. You won't see hardly any difference as far as speed. The only difference will be when you're running something like video encoding/decoding. Plus, you can use the extra $150 to get a better PSU, something like this.

That second one is just flat out sexy. Just got it and it is rock solid. Patriot ram is always good. Not the best, but still good. Might consider dropping to 1G instead of 2G and getting a bigger hard drive. Check www.******and see if there are any good hard drive deals going on.

That's my advice. Take if for what it's worth.

for the cpu, you should also consider the opteron 165 or 170

are you going to be overclocking? or are you going for stability? depending on what you're going for, your mobo might need to be changed.

hard drive: go with a western digital with 16mb cache. you'll appreciate this change.

just wondering, what gpu are you planning on upgrading to?

I just got an extra $47.50 more off an Ebay auction I wasnt expecting.

I really want to go dual core, be ready for the future. Multithreaded apps and games are just around the corner.

I think ill spend the extra money on a better PSU, I was really worried about that, I plan on going SLI eventually.

So what is the difference between SATA 3.0 GB/S and SATA 150?

I dont really plan on overclocking my CPU at all, Ive heard all about the Opterons amazing overclocking ability, but I just dont want to get into that.

I eventually plan on upgrading to two eVGA 7800 GT CO, and overclocking them a bit.

I think I will get a better HDD like you suggested. That and a better PSU.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Isnt the P160 pretty expensive? More than $120?

Ill look around for some more RAM options. I was originally getting OCZ just like the Patriot, but the rebate went away, and this was the better deal.

Ill really look into a fortron PSU. They seem to be the favorite around here. Sound very reliable.

build your machine for today as it will be "old" in 6mos at most. what are you going to use the machine for? and as far as smp/smt(multithreaded) games and apps are just around the corner, well in the apps dept they have been out for years like adobe products, etc and the games wil start to take advantage but in a game they are mostly gpu limited no anyway over 1280x1024 with even a 3200.

Ya, I was kinda worried about that AGP and PCI thing. It took me about an hour to find out if it was PCI or AGP because its so old. Its PCI, though, so it should work.

Would it be worth spending the extra $ for the premium edition of the mobo?

I thought SLI let you really crank up the resolution and graphics? Should I just get one 7800 GT and an XFI sound card instead?

I noticed that the OCZ PSU's mentioned by engineereeyore have a single 12v rail, while most others mentioned here and in other threads have dual 12v rails. What difference will this make in any build such as the one in this thread? How does it effect PCI-e, etc?
