First time AMD OC'er, need some advice for the OC on my rig

MSI K8N Neo4 Plat, Venice 3000+ E6, Corsair VS PC3200, XP-90, Panaflo med speed
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update: 9/3 - Part 2...

2.43ghz @ 270 FSB, stock voltage. Any higher, and I start to get memtest errors.
Ram at 220mhz, stock voltage, 4:5

----------------------------------

Update: 9/3

I tried to change my ram from cas2.5 to cas3, but my PC won't post if i try that.

I'm also having some issues trying to get a higher CPU OC with stock ram timings, and dividers...

Max OC of FSB:
280 (mem at 1:2)
240 (mem at 2:3)

If i try to put my FSB any higher than 240 I start getting errors in memtest. I've tried to up the ram voltage as high as 2.85, but its had no effect.

What if I just ran my divider at 1:2 all the time so I can keep my CPU OC higher? How much would that hurt performance in games like BF2?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OP:

I've only OC'd, and messed with the CPU settings so far, havn't tried OC'ing memory yet...

CPU @ 2609mhz, HTT 290x9, 1.45v, HTT mult 2.5x, CPU multi 9x
34C load / 31C idle (not positive on this, read further)

Memory set to 100mhz (1:2) @ 1T.

1) How's everything look so far? The CPU OC looks ok, voltage maybe a bit high?

2) Any suggestions on how-to OC the ram? I've looked through eclipse's guide, but i'm not sure on how to approach changing the timings of the ram, and what divider I should use.

3) Random question, in SpeedFan i'm not sure what Temps2/3 are. Currently at load... Temp1: 33C, Temp2 40C, Temp3 16C.

I'd start with 133 mem divider (2:3)... I doubt you can run 166 divider (5:6) since your memory may not run so fast. But you should be able to do 133 mem divider. At 290 HTT, mem speed would be 193 MHz. Using 166 divider would force it to run at 242 MHz! I doubt your Corsair VS can go that high...

You effectively oc the memory when you up the HTT so high that at the chosen mem. divider, you still run memory faster than 200 MHz.

Since RAM timing is most important factor of performance for AMD, you want it as low as possible. Even if you can't o/c much with the lowest timing
You can always set dividers.

And DAMN how can you o/c to 290Mhz? My CPU surrendered when o/ced to 255

Actually I read that pure CPU speed will have a greater impact on performance than RAM timings in an AMD.

My FSB is at 286 right now, in the process of running more Prime95 right now so my FSB may go down...

Yes of course
I was saying that memory timing has larger impact than the memory frequency
So you don't have to worry much about the memory frequency

1:2 at 280FSB? So the memory is running at 140Mhz? (DDR 280)?

Aren't there suppose to be a memory divider setting of 5:6?

Try that:
CPU: 9 x 280 = 2520
Memory: 5:6, 166, DDR333 = 229.09 (DDR458)

Wow the 5:6 divider made a HUGE diff for me, thanks.

I've been priming for about 5mins, looks good so far. I'm liking this OC. I may plan on getting 2x1GB OCZ Performance, or Crucial value sticks later to help feed BF2. How much faster do u think the CPU can do with those two kinds of ram?

Dude, I'm not the expert on these things. But, I do have one comment and one question.
First, in the memory section of this web site, there is a "shootout" between different types of "value" RAM. The top performing one, and this was ONLY at the very highest OC they could achieve, was the OCZ Platinum (I think it was Rev.2).

My question is, what are some of the higher frequencies people have attained with a Venice core 3000+? I thought I read some people had insane overclocks like 2.7 GHz or higher.

On a side note, not to brag or anything, but I'm real glad I got an Athlon 64 3400+ 2.4 GHz (at stock) Newcastle. Holy cow, the amount of time you spend learning how to overclock is not worth the extra $100 to me. My thought on that for now anyway. But, I can't wait to try the "automatic overclock" feature on the Asus mobo I ordered. I'll only have to use that next year though. (That 3400+ is not in my machine yet because I my mobo/RAM haven't arrived yet.)

temp2: cpu temp
temp3: nb temp

i got 2.6 out of my E6 when i was testing it. its a good oc justs needs more volts compared to the E3's.

ohhh, i didnt realize it showed the north bridge, wow that thing runs pretty cool. Any idea what are safe temps, voltages on that? I never bothered to give it more voltage cuz i don't know how much it may help my OC at all.

are you talking about the NB voltage? cause i never really touched it in some cases it helped me with stablility but i didnt want to keep it that way cause its sitting under my HOT x800 xt. i dont suggest you fiddle with it but if you want to 1.55~1.60v is safe IMO.
