What's iThena about?

It's basically make a comprehensive map of the World Wide Web aka the Internet.

The project is NCI which means Non-CPU-Intensive and can run along side other projects without slowing them down. I run about 2500 instances across a few of my computers to generate the points I output daily (around 250k - 300k points per day).

The project will consume bandwidth, but not a crazy amount unless you run a crazy amount of instances (like 2k or more). I have a 200Mbps download and 10Mbps connection upload and it does not max my connection out, even with 2500 instances. however, @Fardringle has a monthly data quote and he will run over his cap running too many instances. I am sure he will know more about the bandwidth requirements since he has to follow them closely. I, on the other hand, have unlimited (not caps) bandwidth on my connection so I don't monitor them.

For the record, it doesn't take a strong computer to run a lot of instances; but it does need a decent amount of RAM. 500 instances will consume around 8GB of RAM and I can easily run that on an old Core2Duo laptop with a wired ethernet connection. (I don't run it on wifi)

According to my router logs, each computer running 600 instances of iThena and nothing else (about the most that my old 3rd/4th gen i7 laptops can handle comfortably), uses around 8-10 GB of Internet data per day. It adds up pretty quickly if you have a monthly quota, but it doesn't seem to negatively affect anything else that uses the Internet.

Also, I strongly recommend NOT running it on Linux computers.

The Windows client tasks run for about 3-5 minutes and receive 2 credits each, and each client seems to get a "time out" for a while between tasks which is part of why it's more efficient to run a bunch of clients on one machine.

The Linux client tasks used to run for around 30 minutes, and also get 2 credits each, so already not a good choice compared to the Windows clients. Lately they've been taking 30-50 HOURS to run, using data the whole time, and still only getting 2 credits each.

I'm going to keep at least part of my instances online until I get the personal 50M milestone. I don't know if I'll keep going after that. I like milestones, but I also like not going over my monthly data cap...

I will continue to run it on my two old C2D laptops which combined are around 600 instances. I will be shutting them down on the other computers I have them running on plus my VMs that are running them.

Reminds me of an old defunct(?) project, DIMES I think it was called [edit, yep]. I ran that for years!

I am still learning how this helps the world, but I am looking into it.

I don't mind burning my current (unlimited?) bandwidth, but don't want to burn cpu or gpu cycles that don't help the painfully functioning human world in the end.

I'm one of the oldies that think that within the next 10 years or so, puters / A.I. may be a part of the problem... Either from how they are help the well to do humans or ?
