never had wine before, but i figured its valentines, a recipe i had called for a red wine sauce, so i thought id have a glass with my steak

except i didnt like it so i had a coke :/

i tried a merlot my wife picked up somewhere, nothing special, and i didnt like the taste really. should i bother with another red wine? maybe a white wine? champaigne? i dont mind exploring, so what do some of you enjoy that i could try? or do you just pass over wine totally?

Wine is definitely an acquired taste. I didn't like wine with many foods at first either, but after you've tried a few different wines, and learn to savor the flavor, you can appreciate it alot more. Red wine + filet mignon = mmmmmmmmmmm
-my 2 cents

Hmm..I don't think I liked merlot the first time I tried it either, but now I drink a glass about every day. I'd try as many different kinds of wine as you can, both white and red. You might also try different brands. You never know when you'll come across something you like.

If you don't like Merlot, it's unlikely you'll like other red wines.

Try a dry and a sweet white wine and see if you like either of those.

Chardonnay for a dry white and a Riesling for a sweet white. There are dry Rieslings so don't get that.

Try a fine white wine ... like Mad Dog 20-20.

Drink a bottle of that, and all of a sudden you're seeing vapour trails!

Don;t expect wine that comes in a box to taste good.

Are there any wineries near where you live? I am lucky enough to be close to the finger lakes in NY - there are dozens and dozens of wineries there. They will let you in for a tour of the facility and then (the best part) wine tasting!!!! You get to sample a lot of their product. This helped my wife and I (total wine noobs) discover what we liked without buying bottle after bottle and wasting money.

If there are none close by your home, try to schedule a vacation near a winery area. I think almost all of them do tours/tasting.

*EDIT*

Here is a partial list of Finger Lakes wineries
If anyone ever travels through central NY, make sure to do a winery run (they are all just about within an hour of each other!!!)

LOL - tried that at the winery here in NY. VERY VERY sweet (think grape/juice kool-aid sweet!) but my wife LOVED it.

A good red for a beginner, I would say a Pinot Nior, but even some of those could be too dry for you.

MD 20/20 or Mad Dog is very good, but only get the dark red (18% alcohol by vol).

More info at Bum Wines

Rated #1 for "warmth".
