If you don't get a 4.0 in grad school you are doing something wrong :p

Every person I know who's gone through a masters has gotten a 4.0!

It really depends on the school. If you goto a school just to get the degree for a job reason then I would expect a 4.0, but if you goto say MIT for a CS Masters totally different story :p

Bullshit. you must be going to a community college grad school. It's impossible that everybody gets a 4.0.

Not when you're looking for any way you can to make somebody feel like shit. We now know that Crusty has a hell of a lot to compensate for.

Let me first say that a graduate GPA is a little deceiving, given that you need to maintain a 3.0 to even stay in the program.

Having said that, I got a 3.0 this semester in grad school, which is also my first semester in grad school.

2 classes, both B's, while working full time.

The sexual innuendo is strong in this thread.

Yeah. My first semester in undergrad community college is 4A and 1C
Class for C is English...like 20 people dropped that class, leaving only 7, I was one of 7.
~3.6 gpa

I call bullshit. As mentioned elsewhere in the thread, grad school GPA's are fubar due to the 3.0 min. requirement, but at any school with real professors in a real program, you're going to have to bust your balls for a 4.0. I work full time 3rd shift and am working on my master's in mathematics, and fuck me, I'm damn proud of my 3.7. Just because some dipshit at DeVry working on a faux-MBA can get a 4.0 with no effort doesn't mean all grad school GPA's are fuxx0red.

You're a retard. It's not possible for everyone to get a 4.0 unless everyone gets the exact same score on every homework+test, and even then they won't give everyone an A if the school applies a bell curve (everyone will get an arbitrary grade).

I've got a 3.55 (A- and a B+) after my first quarter, failing is anything below a 3.0. Usually people with a 3.3 or greater will pass the qual on the first try, meaning I'm well on my way toward a PhD. I'm at a UC school, so a bell curve is applied in every class (thus, some people have to fail).

I also work 25 hours/week as a tutor, so while that does take away from study time, it helps me at the same time to keep those algebra skills sharpened to a fine point. I'm hoping to do better this next quarter.

Honestly, no professor is going to give everyone in the class an A. You'd have to be a moron to believe that (ie Crusty)

Grad School Grades
A = You know what you're doing
B = You have no idea what you're doing
C/D/F = Your professor wants to kick you out of the university.

Exactly. I have a 4.0 average as well, but so does 90% of my class.

Grades don't really matter much in grad school for engineering (business/med school on the other hand is another story).

Grad school is curved to a B average. While undergrad is curved to a C average. Usually if you are in grad school you are highly motivated (paying tuition $$$/thus you won't slack off) or you got into the PhD program and are smart enough to get by the work. Some will fail (B- or below) but if you are within the average you'll pass. But then there's research/seminar classes in which everyone gets A's which boosts your gpa...

congrats

and just to confirm to others

anything less than a B is fail. You have to have a 3.0 minimum.

I would also expect grades to be higher in general, because grad school is optional and usually those who excelled in their undergrad go to it. I know there are exceptions - but in general, only a slice of those who are about the curve actually choose to pursue graduate school. I wouldn't be suprised even if they gave out Cs, that most of the class would score fairly high only because they'll put more effort into it.

And a 4.0 average...RIIIIGHT. What did you go into? AFAIK, a 4.0 in science or engineering isn't easy to get...graduate school or not. Of course everyone is between 3.0 and 4.0 but to get a 4.0 straight up is damned difficult.

Then to be honest - I've learned (Still an undergrad...) that grades aren't the biggest thing in graduate school...especially if you pursue a PhD (although you'd literally have to know everything so I don't see how your grades can't be pretty damned good)

In my grad class (at MIT) the prof says roughly half get A's and half get B's. There's a lot of self-selection though. Obviously everyone there is decently qualified, but you can also drop classes up to 3 weeks before the end of the semester if you're doing crappy.

And then there are the PhD programs where the research/seminar classes don't influence your GPA (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory report only, no letter grade)
