Actually it took me about 2 hours.

Are you thinking of Gentoo?

Possibly, I tried my hand at installing both and one of them took an insanely long time.

That's gentoo.

Only if you have to bootstrap, though.

Congrats OP!

Ayup. However, in another thread, I tested a quad Opteron 848 server with 4Gb RAM, and that, for example, compiled and installed XOrg in 13-15 minutes. A full kernel compile was down into something like 4-5 minutes.

Maybe those figures are way off, but compared to my 2600+ machine, it was awesomely fast- never seen a machine make Gentoo Stage 1 so freaking fast.

Only took me two days on a P-150.

Enjoy Debian though. :)

A friend of mine helped me bootstrap Gentoo once. Thats one hell of an installation, I tell you, just ridiculous.

I've since switched to AMD64 so my old install is worthless and I want it back. I'm going to install from the stage-3 tarball as soon as I have a good day to devote to it. Gentoo rocks.

I love how I can upgrade the entire distro to a new version (I'm running Sarge now) by typing "apt-get -u dist-upgrade" :)
