First pic with my new D5000 + 35mm f1.8

Nice... how does the 35 1.8 autofocus? Does it seem fast? Noisey?

seemed both fast and quiet to me, though I'll preface that with the fact that I didn't get the chance to snap more than a few pics. It was on par with the 16-85 in terms of noise/speed, which I also snapped some pics with on Saturday.

I don't think you'd hear either if you weren't right next to the camera listening for it.
