first pc build help

hello to everyone, im building a pc for the first time, and i have a soltek sl-k8an2e-gr mobo with a amd 64 3000+ , 1 512mb of corsair ram, and a geforce 5500OC AGP, and a 80gb maxtor sata hd, when i power everything up nothing shows up on the screen, and also when i plug in IDE cable to my dvd rom drive the power cuts off to the dvd drive, if i remove it it begins to work again and the drives opens. what do i need to do in order to install windows and the drivers for my video card?

is your video card securely fastened?

Just as an overview of a PC build, mechbgon's guide is very good.

Before we worry about the DVD drive, we should get the comptuer to POST first.

First lets try the easiest thing, reset the CMOS on your motherboard.

Also, did you remember to install the motherboard standoffs that go inbetween the motherboard and the case to keep it from touching the backplate?

yes ive installed the standoffs i tried clearing the cmos but still blank screen monitor light is amber

Did the heatsink installation go well? Are you pretty sure you got it right?

If you have a different stick of ram to try, see if you can switch it and see if it helps anything. If the 512mb is in two 256mb sticks, try runnings them one at a time.

Also, try disconnecting the harddrive and anything else not required to get a post.

Is there a power connector on the videocard that you didn't plug in?

What kind of powersupply do you have?

Did you plug in the 12V power connector to the motherboard too?

i only have one stick of 512mb ram, ive also disconnected everything that not required to get a post i have a antec 500v psu and yes the power is connected to the mobo
