Check these things to start with:

1) the motherboard should be mounted on top of standoffs.

2) the video card should have its auxiliary power cable hooked up.

3) the motherboard should have its four-pin ATX12V cable hooked up, and also plug in the third power plug that's near the rear of the board (takes a four-pin plug like a hard drive would take).

4) make sure the memory modules are in the blue slots.

5) if you have any case wiring hooked up to USB or Firewire headers, unplug it for now.

6) make sure the video card is in the correct slot for single-card operation (read the manual for more info on this)

Hope that helps, welcome to the Forums :)

sounds like you are getting a short somewhere in the case. Try to boot with just processor, fan, memory, and video card. Then start hooking things up one by one as it works. I once had a power supply with a bad connector that would do the same thing if you used that power connector. Didn't use that connector everything worked fine.

I would clear the CMOS. Follow the instructions in the manual. Some manufacturers now want the battery removed in conjunction with moving a jumper.

If that doesn't work disconnect the power button connection at the motherboard. Start the system by momentarily shorting across those two pins. A phillips screwdriver works very well for this. You may have a defective switch. But I think the CMOS will take care of it.

At boot up, in the lower left corner (could be near the top left) will be the BIOS revision number. Go here, choose Query by Motherboard, plug in the model of your board and see if your processor is supported by the revision you are using.

Looks like there are three versions of your processor. Check that against the BIOS version you are at. You may need to flash your BIOS to a newer version.

mechBgon gave you some good advice on checking whether your HS/Fan was attached properly. Did you investigate that?

Edit: Looking at your manual right now. The CPU and CHA2 fan connectors are really close together. You sure it's connected to the right one?

i reset the cosmos
You reset the cosmos? I thought something weird was goin' on... Hopefully my credit-card balance will be zero again! :Q

*mouse clicks, typing*

...darn! :(

In the BIOS menus, go into the hardware-monitoring page and what does the CPU temperature read? Does it steadily climb, what's it doing?

Bolting your motherboard straight to the case without standoffs could've damaged it electrically, too, so this may be a $175 lesson in reading the owner's manual.

I do not know. Perhaps check the paperwork that came with it or the AMD site?

Did you see my edit in my last post? Be double certain you have the fan connected to the right connector.

I really think you should sleep on this tonight. Sit down and read the motherboard manual carefully. Your motherboard is the equivalent of a Formula One car and it takes a lot of practice and experience to drive a F1 car.

mechBgon and I are giving you different paths to explore and I really feel that he is giving better advice right now. I'm going to step away for awhile. I hope he hangs in here. Good Luck!

Your store invoice may particularly state which core it has, see if it shows that.

Reset the cosmos again and that should get it off of the hangup. Don't do whatever you did with the fan control anymore.
