what is a "second party" maker?

eg. you can buy a 1st party ipod accessory from apple, or buy a 3rd party ipod accessory from Belkin. what's a 2nd party accessory?

There is a second-person perspective in English - take a look at the old "Choose Your Own Adventure" books.

I see what you are saying. I guess from a developers point of view, say capcom, they see themselves as a 2nd party to Sony and Nintendo. But since we aren't part of Capcom or Sony (or Nintendo in this instance), to us, it's a third party.

It's kind of confusing, but is really does just boil down to the english rules of 1st person, 2nd person, and 3rd person.

1st person = I make a game for my system.
2nd person = You make a game for my system.
3rd person = They make a game for my system.

Not if you use it yourself, i believe if you sell it or give it to soemone else, then it becomes third party.

In the videogame industry, at least.
(I shall use nintendo as my example)

1st Party: Part of the parent company. Internal Nintendo devolopement team. Cannot possibly make games for other companies. (EAD, Intelligent Systems, HAL, Retro)
Usually created and funded purely by the parent company.


2nd Party: Developer that was once 3rd party, but has been bought (or "leased") by Nintendo. For X amount of years, they can only make games on Nintendo hardware. Nintendo pays most of the costs associated with the developing. (Past examples: Rare, Silicon Knights, Factor 5.) I'm not sure if nintendo currently has any second parties left.


3rd Party: Can make games for all systems in theory, even if they sometimes don't. Who they make games for can be influenced by pretty much anything. (Capcom, Namco, Square, EA, etc.) They can have an exclusive on one console, and then have 10 other games for different consoles coming out at the same time. Recently, they also have a tendency to backstab the "exclusive" status. (Example: Resident Evil 4 on PS2, GTA on Xbox, MGS on xbox)
