First overclocking experience w/ XP 1600+

I just setup my new Athlon XP 1600+ system. I did not unlock the processor. I changed the FSB to 166 so I'm running at 1.75 GHz (2100+) on an Epox 8k5a2. My HSF is a Thermaltake Volcano 7+ and I have it set at Medium speed and my memory is Corsair XMS PC3200 Cas 2. The High-speed setting on this fan is a little too loud to use all the time. Right now the cpu temp is at about 44* C. It seems to be running fine right now. I don't know if I should try to go much higher or not. I know the ram can handle it. I couldn't find the option in the bios for setting the AGP/PCI to 4/5 divider. Also, how high can the temp go before it might cause damage? Thanks!
 
Ain't life grant on an AGOIA-Y core? 44oC is a great temperature. The chips safe up to around 90oC, according to AMD, but factoring in inaccuracies in the thermistor that reads the temps, etc., you're probably gonna wanna keep it under 75ish, if even that. Most people feel uncomfortable over 60, but it's totally OK.

Just because your motherboard doesn't have the 1/5 divider in BIOS, doesn't mean it doens't have it at all! On my MSI KT3 Ultra2 there's a little bug, but if you set the BIOS to anything over 152MHz and don't go into the memory timing section of the BIOS afterwards, the 1/5 divider kicks in automatically. I am running my AGOIA at 166 now too. I seriously doubt you'd have gotten that high without a 1/5 divider anyway, so I'm guessing it's operating. What mobo have you got?

nice oc. I have an epox 8kha+, the specs clearly states there's no 1/5 divider, but it runs at 167 just fine. strange.

1. 1/5 divider kicks in once you set your fsb at 166 and over. You can check what your fsb and multiplier is set at in windows by using "cpiud"
2. the temp in the 8k5a2 is die temp, not the innaccurate inconsistent thermosistor,

I have my 1600 running at 10x 180mhz load temp is 52 degrees

you are wasting your memory by keeping it at 166. Providing you did a good unlocking you should be able set the multiplier down to 9 or 10 and put your fsb at 180 or even 190 at cas 2.

I botched my unlocking so only have 10 as my lowest multplier. if I had 9x multplier I would certainly up the fsb to 190

check the motherboard forum theres lots of stuff about the 8k5a2 (its even sticked)


edit sorry did not notice that you did not unlock your cpu. TRY 180 fsb your memory should not hold you back.

Update: I'm running stable at 1.85 GHz now with 175 FSB. At idle or just doing light web surfing the temperature is around 46-47* C. when playing a game such as Quake III it will reach 51-52* C. And that's with the fan set to Medium speed. I might be able to hit 180 FSB if I want to. But my system is still being held back by my old GF1 DDR video card and ATA 66 Hard drive. I don't have the spare cash for those right now but I'll upgrade them later.
 
I have the same 1600+ and Corsair 3200 on Soyo KT 400. Mem is set @ 200 cas2 2 5 3 1t command 2twtr. CPU i 133. and very stable. running @ 1.4 now. 166 FSB, win2k will load to desktop but freeze with no errors. Your MOBO must be very stable. Congrats. Nice OC. guess I'll have to unlock now.
 
Looks like it maxes out at about 177 FSB. I tried 180, 179, 178 but I couldn't boot into windows or I could but it would quickly blue screen. I think 175 FSB is the best I can do and stay stable. Not bad for a $55 processor =)
 
After looking through some other posts on here I found out I can increase the voltage even more. So I set the voltage to 1.825 in the BIOS (Sandra reports it as 1.85 V?) and now I've got it up to 1.91 GHz (2400+!!!) but idle is at 48* C. What do you think?
 
That's pretty amazing! That CPU wasn't even designed to run FSB anywhere near that speed. Still unlocked? I have diff stepping on mine. I forgot the serial AGOIA? Not sure, but checked it out when I bought it. Also, Soyo board probably not quite as stable from what your testing shows. I tried all these things and best I could do was 140 FSB @ 10.5 (default Multiplier). Mem is 200 with the settings mentioned above. Benches @ 9188 in 3Dmark2001. Sean go ahead and test it at 1.91ghz with prime95 and watch the temps....These athlons can take a bit of heat....If you get into mid 60's but are stable that is all that matters...I bet you can keep it under 60c in load....

But you need to prime95 test it as well as memtest the memory...too many ppl oc and think stable means you can load windows and run a few desktop apps....It doesn't mean sh^t....
 
I just did a stress test with Sandra 2002. At 1.85 GHz/175 FSB/1.80 V it reached a peak temperature of 52.5* C. Idle is around 47-48. I had the fan set to medium speed the whole time. I think I'm going to leave it here. It's stable now. I was getting occasional blue screens saying "hardware malfunction" until I bumped up the voltage, which also increased temperatures. I'll probably test 1.91 GHz again just for fun to see if I can get it stable. I'll have to run the fan at the highest speed to do that though, and it's just too loud to run it like that all the time. 1.85 GHz is a great overclock. Much more than I expected with only AIR COOLING and NO other case fans. With an extreme cooling setup it would probably be capable of hitting 2.0 GHz. But I'll leave that to the pro's

Did you ever verify whether the board is using a 1/5 pci divider??? I mean if it wasn't and was still using a 1/4 the pci bus would be running near 44mhz now and could be doing damage and possilbly the reason for the BSOD at 1.91mhz...In my experience BSOD are usually related to the memory or the mobo chipset, each of which are sensitive to the fsb. The corsair is nice so I bet you can't set too aggressive of timings for that beast....The mobo chipset could be another issue and sometimes there is nothing you can do for it voltage wise....I guess you can try to apply some As3 and put a chipset fan on it if it doesn't have one...maybe it is getting too hot for its liking...

YOu should keep that pci to 38mhz or less for my liking and most HDD safety....
 
Actually I don't know what the frequencies are for the AGP/PCI busses. If there's no divider then I think it would be 70/35. How can I find out? I couldn't find any info in WCPUID or Sandra 2002 but maybe I overlooked it. Someone said that it would probably kick in automatically after 166 FSB. I'm not sure if it did or not. I don't really want to overclock the AGP and PCI at all if I don't have to.

I think the BSOD was because there wasn't enough voltage. I did get occasional crashes at 1.85 with the voltage at default but I don't get it anymore with the voltage at 1.8. The memory should not be a bottleneck at all. It should be good up to 200 FSB at the least. I have it set to 'Turbo' mode in the BIOS.

I'm thinking about putting some AS3 on my GeForce DDR and overclocking it too (until I can get a new video card). I overclocked it a bit today and barely broke 4000 in 3DMark 2001se. But I went from 135 fps to 203 fps in Quake 3 at 640x480. Not too bad 🙂
 
i have the same board, and when you input the fsb clock in bios (i.e. 175) it should say "agp/pci bus speed" and list them right underneath it. they change as you change your bus speed. take a looksy 🙂

That's only partly true. For their Tbirds AMD published information (in their PDF papers) giving temperature settings. I have not seen this type of information included anymore. For the Tbirds, most of them had the same temperatures, though the highest speed ones had LOWER rated temperatures. There were two temperature ratings. The 90ºC rating is the absolute maximum the CPU can survive without suffering thermal death. There is a nominal 60ºC rating for the maximum OPERATING temperature. Basically AMD is saying to keep your CPU at 60ºC or less for stability.

I've personally seen an Athlon XP 1900+ running (unoverclocked) at almost 80ºC while in the BIOS monitoring screen. Turned out it was a problem with the heatsink. That was back in March or April. The CPU is still in use today, at a mild FSB-only overclock to XP 2000+ levels.
 
Also that 90c temp ppl like to throw around is temperature at core and since most socket a mobos don't read temps at the core the temp would be lower at the surface to be equal to 90c internally.

The 52.5c is a great temp for an amd system...no worries!!!!
