I just successfully overclocked my first computer. I've built a couple but always gone with stock/standard everything. You know, standard crucial ram, stock heatsinks, etc... So far I've been running S@H (w00t), go team AT! at 100% cpu load for the last 12 hours. Here's my setup if anyone cares:

Aspire X-Dreamer Case
DFI Lanparty NFII Ultra B
2x 256 OCZ Platinum 2-2-3-5 1T PC 3200 ram @ 2-2-2-5 1T settings (400 mhz bus of course) Dual Channel
Retail Barton 2500+ @ 3200+ (2200mhz)
Vantec TMD Heatsink
Plextor 52x burner
ASUS 16X DVD-ROM
Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 80 Gig SATA Drive
ON order: MSI GF5700 Ultra 128 Meg card (currently gf2 mx, blah slow blah)
Vantec Nexus 3.5" Fan and light control
6x Blue LED, Clear, almost silent Case Fans
2x Vantec Blue Cold Cathodes, 2x UV Sunbeam Cathodes
On order: Aspire 500 W clear powersupply, black aluminum, 2x fan w/led and speed control
Speakers: Klipsch Promedia thx 2.1's

So far it's running a steady 44 C (low 42, avg 44, high 45) all C over the last 12 hrs..

What do you all think? Have I officially become a geek? 😀 I can't wait to get my vid card and actually start fragging!

looks good! now it's time to do some stability testing! the worst thing that could happen is having a random reboot while "fragging" 🙂 it's happened to me before...

you can try prime95 to stability test your cpu.. make sure it runs for at least 6 hours or to your heart's content

it 's good, I guess the DFI revision B can get your Barton to 3200+. , the only weak point in your set up is your video card, run 3dmarks and post your score

That's what happened before I got the better Vantec CPU Cooler. I think it wasn't rebooting because of over heating, just the cpu wasn't cool enough..??

What vcore did you end up using? Stock? Did you add any?

vcore is 1.60, so far I've been stable for over 20 hours or so at 100% cpu load with seti @ home...

The FX 5700 Ultra or the old GF2mx?? I'm waiting until a card comes out that Halo and HL2 won't bring to it's knees like an altar boy. If you look at avg framerate 9800XT is a good card, but when you really look into their new High/Low/Avg Framerates, even the 9800XT drops below 18 in quite a few parts of the game... I'll just run the old code path at low res with the 5700 and play UT2k3 and such.

This is probably an ignorant question from another NooB....

I thought the Barton 2500+ was now locked. Is this not the case?

If your's is locked how'd you get it to 3200+? If it's not locked where'd you get it from?

Locked means the multiplier is locked, that's in the CPU internally. The FSB, which is controlled by the motherboard can still be changed.
