And I'd like to add that I think married Catholic priests is a good thing. Alcoholism due to lonliness is the biggest problem among Catholic priests.

bamacre, I'm not talking about "pocket churches" and "club churches", like most of the ones you post. I'm talking about the two largest branches in Christianity: Orthodox and Catholic. The fragmentation of the Protestant and neo-Protestant rites has less to deal with ecumenic differences than with personal ambitions stemming from their various "leaders" and "founders" - even Luther himself would be in shock to see them today.

can someone explain to me why catholic priest aren't allowed to marry?

I mean to me if they were married it give them even more leg to stand on when they preach family values and other things.

I'm not religious or anything but it seems odd for an unmarried person to be the one doing the talking about this when they've never had to deal with the various things that go with marriage.

One of the church's explanation would be that they want the priest to hold nothing to be above God. The fear would be that when the church needed someone in BFE, the wife of the priest would argue against the move. Any decision the priest would have to make would have to take into consideration the family of the priest. As it is now, the church owns an unmarried priest.

Which brings us to the real reason. An unmarried priest has no property and no obligation. If a priest buys a house, that house goes back to the church. If a priest were to marry, the widow/legacy of the priest would get this land, as it stands now, it is all the church's.

Zimbabwe-born Evans David Gliwitzki, who has two daughters aged 30 and 40, was ordained Sunday in the town of La Laguna on the island of Tenerife by Bishop Felipe Fernandez, leading daily El Pais said.
This is not news, except that it took place on the Spanish-owed Canary Islands. The Catholics have been allowing married priests in Africa for decades, due to the cultural system there in which nephews are more likely to inherit than sons (and inheritence is the reason why Catholic priests are not permitted to marry).

And I strongly disagree with your statement regarding "pocket churches" and "club churches," and ignoring Protestantism as an important branch of Christianity.

Are you talking about eastern orthodox and roman catholic or roman catholic and protestant?

That is completely irrelevent to the topic. But I wouldn't expect you of all people to understand that, or much of anything else either.

Leftists love attacking the Catholic church because their communism is a competitor for the same type of power over the people (that the church once had). Marx didn't say that "religion is the opiate of the people" in order to attack religion, but to explain the relationship that comunists should seek to emulate.

married Anglican priests who became Catholic priests
are rare, but have been around for awhile.

eastern rite Catholic priests may be married as long as
the marriage occurs prior to ordination.

Nothing bars a married man from becoming a preist, they are just encouraged to become deacons instead because it is less of a burden on a family. There have been married Americans - that are also Roman Catholics - take the pledge of celibacy and then go on to become preists. It is just so much easier to take the deacon route and the job is much less demanding.
