Do people who have played the subsequent MK games really think this? I don't see how the more recent ones have gotten WORSE. DS > * IMO.

 My favorite player was Koopa Troopa, but they subsequently removed him from the series. 🙁

It was all abou the Toad. Mofo could move!

toad and koopa = same exact stats/controls 😛

just like mario = luigi, bowser = donkey kong, and princess = yoshi.

god i think i'm going to grab my SNES from my moms this weekend and hook it up at my place 🙂

I know I know...

Yoshi/Princess = Max Accel
DK/Bowser = Top Speed
Toad/Koopa = Tight Handeling
Mario/Luigi = Balanced?

But Toad is still >>> *

I thought Toad was the fastest since he was the smallest. Unfortunately, he got knocked around alot.

nah they all had pro's and cons.

bowser/dk = they had the top speed, could drive right through anyone, but their accelleration and turning were bad.

yoshi/princess = they had the best accelleration but they had the lowest max speed, but they could be knocked around by bowser/dk and mario/luigi, but could knock around toad/koopa.

koopt/toad = they had the best handling hands down by far, had a fairly decent top speed, but they could be knocked around by anyone.

mario/luigi = they were the average of everything.

I only use koopa/toad, however I can also use bowser pretty well. but if I was going to pick my best it woudl definitely be toad.

but if you can master bowser/dk, you will be the best cause no one can catch up to you.

that is what pissed me off in every mario kart other than the SNES one - it was so easy to catch up to the person in front.

In the N64 version the computer(s) can catch up with you easily but not other human players via pure race.

I hate playing the DS version online because it's impossible to win if you are in 1st the whole time. Some jerk always blue shells me

the gameplay mechanics and control are not even remotely close. they are just 2 completely different games. the 64 one lacks speed, you can't even jump/slide (and instead addded some stupid slide where you can get power boosts, which resulted in snaking abuse), when you are losing you don't have to be good to get back in front because they will give you the weapons you need to take out everyone in front of you, and just generall speaking the game is way too easy.

i remember i beat mario kart 64 in like 2 or 3 days and wished I had never bought it.

When I play with friends there's always one person who gets stuck in last and will get nonstop lightning bolts and stars and still will end up in last (and its not that they're puposefully losing either, I watch and they race the same as everyone else). Maybe you're playing against people who are just better than you, but I don't have a problem vying for first place in every race even when I don't get items and other people get really lucky (as in getting 3 red shells when they're in second or even first).

I get so sick of hearing people whine about the "catch-up" features put in games. I used to not like them but now I do (specifically when you're playing against actual people and not the AI). It makes games much more frantic and exciting. In my personal experience, a good player can overcome it and a bad one won't. If you're all comparable skill level it actually doesn't make that much difference that I've seen (as you'll just end up trading places more than usual).

I don't think the SNES or N64 is really better than each other, they're both good but kinda different. The SNES one is more about actual racing while the N64 one is more about battling.

Double Dash is odd. I hated it at first, but just needed to get used to the odd control, but after that it becomes fun too. The battle arenas in that game weren't very good though, all small. Its ok for one or maybe two, but when there's only 4 total and they're all small it kinda ruins it.

They need to make a Mariokart anthology type game. Maybe do something like Smash Bros. where they have a large group of characters. Do something so you can make it be more race oriented or battle oriented. Give you control over the items. It'd be great to include a level creator.

A really good Mariokart, paired with a good Smash Bros. might be enough to get me to buy a Wii.

Ok, I went and played some single player Mario Kart 64 this past weekend. If that's what you're basing it on (or even 2 player, the Grand Prix races) then I can see why you wouldn't like it, but its much more multiplayer oriented, and thats where it really shines. The GP, unless you're playing the extra (reversed) ones is definitely too easy. The SNES version is much better in that respect, but battle or non-GP multiplayer is nowhere near as good as the 64 one.

Yah I was talking about the racing. The N64 version has no where NEAR as good a racing engine and is not nearly as fun playing 2 player as the SNES 150cc races are. Single player GP mode IMO on SNES is still much much more fun than the N64 one as it requires skill to be out in front of the pack. There are a few courses on the SNES one where I can lap the entire pack because I can get out on them so much. And I don't hav eto worry about some stupid blue shell coming at me from some skilless player.

Mario kart 64 sucked so bad taht I hardly even made it to the battle mode. However ... if you are good at SNES battle mode, playing the N64 battle mode is not that tough. Battle mode has a small amount of randomness to it which can throw off who the better person is.

However in SNES mario kart, I can pretty much guarantee I will beat most people 9/10 times 😀

Seriously? MK64 was fantastic. If anything I'm going to avoid it if it's like DD. Which wasn't bad, but was no where near the caliber of the first 2.

MK64 was awful. It had the typical "sequel syndrome" where they catered it to a broader audience which in turn made the game a lot easier and a lot less skillful then the original one.

Do you have some specific changes in mind? I haven't played either the original or MK64 in years but even back then I never noticed a huge difference.

The only thing I can think of that you might mean is the computer assist aspect where the last place player gets better items/seems to drive faster, but I don't know if that has actually changed since the original.

other than it being easy to beat, the rest is a bunch of BS

sounds like you're just sore because you're not good enough to beat your friends consistently and thus have learned to complain about the lagging players getting help from power ups what not

IMO that is brilliant because it adds a ton of strategy where you might not want to be in first place the entire race, but instead hang back at certain points until you have a chance to best make your run for 1st

but just as there are people who like their food plain and bland and can't handle the spicy, I guess the same holds true for video games

stick to GT and Forza, Mario Kart should never be intended as serious racer where it takes "driving skill" to win, it is more of a battle racer than anything and I think you should realize that

of course if they really wanted to make the game great they should add the option to turn off / control certain aspects (powerups/handicaps/whatever), similar to how you can control the item powerups in Super Smash Bros where I can sort of sympathize with you in the sense that I can usually beat my friends without problem unless they have the powerups to abuse - so we can turn it off and on and have all sorts of different experiences

I never played DD, but i enjoyed MK64 battle on many a night drunkin night in college. I also liked SNES MK; that was amazing. Using the secret code to make them "shrink" in the player select screen gave you an advantage as long as you could avoid people. ahhh... memories.

I will rent this game to try it before i commit to purchasing it.

That's exactly why I enjoy Mario Kart. The best moments are being able to fire off that shell right before the finish line and make your friend end up in last place because of it.

Yah but is it more fun when you can fire a blue shell and nail them with it without having to do anything other than closing your eyes and pressing a button, or is it more fun when you are sliding around a turn aiming almost perpindicular to the screen with a green shell and can lead the shot to hit them with the perfect shot. and I'm not talkin about when you have 3 green shells circliing you giving you 3 chances, i'm talking about when you have that 1 shot attempt.
