First Mac (Can I upgrade from OS 9 to OS X 10.4+)

I just got my first Mac ever (woot!) it's a wee ibook G3 12" A1005

Specs:
12" LCD
600mhz
256mb pc100 onboard (upgrading this to 768mb max)
20~30Gb hdd
CDRW/DVD
Currently running OS 9 Tiger (I think)

I would like to upgrade the OS from OS 9 to OS X 10.4+ what are the exact steps I would need to do, also I'd like to completely wipe the drive of OS 9 if that is possible. Lastly the battery doe lock in place but it does not fully go into the battery bay it sticks out from the bottom about 1/16 th an inch can this be fixed?

Thanks.

Tiger is OS X 10.4. None of the OS 9 builds had cat names. It should be able to run 10.4, but i would recommend upgrading the RAM first. You'll need to get your hands on a Tiger installation disc. Put that in the drive, and boot the machine while holding the C key. You can run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu to erase the drive, then exit Disk Utility, and follow the onscreen prompts to install Tiger.

Should be fine, I've actually run 10.4 on a notebook with the minimum 256 MB of RAM and it wasn't nearly as painful as I was expecting. It'll obviously run better with the extra RAM, though.

One thing to keep in mind: G3 Ibooks die. All notebooks do, but G3 Ibooks are like redshirts in Star Trek. There's a flaw with the logic board that causes some soldering joints to break, causing the computer not to boot. This computer's old enough that it wouldn't be viable for much longer anyways, but you most likely WILL run into a problem where the computer won't boot sooner rather than later.

i get a 256mb (the 512mb he had was not compatable*) from a computer shop owner that owes me a favor. going to try a few others tomorrow.

anyway updated to OS X 10.4.11 it's awesome but still a few things i need to figure out. (like how to copy images from a website *non-copyright).

any good site that offer free or cheap software, i rather enjoyed imove in 9.2 but it's not available in 10.4

To copy an image from a website, you just drag it to where you want it.

hmm, mac's are really simple is there anyway to save it to a specific directory other then drag drop?
