First Look: 2005 Land Rover LR3

TextWith an even 300 horsepower and 315 pound-feet of torque the LR3's 4.4-liter V8 is a substantial improvement over the previous model's meager V8. A six-speed automatic transmission is also new, helping to make the most out of the engine's available power.

Nice....good to see a decent sized engine in that puppy. Just makes me wonder how bad the gas milage is going to suffer. I hope the 6spd will help it some by giving it more low-end torque at lower RPMs for city driving.

It's unibody on a frame. If they can get the best of both worlds, why not?
Also
Additionally, it's possible to listen to three different sources of music with the front two seats getting blasted by up to 600 watts of music power (that's the optional system; the base system has 300) while outboard passengers in both the second and third row can listen to headphones hooked up to the radio, CD player, the auxiliary input and, later in the year, an optional DVD player.

Somehow I question the ability of rear passengers to listen to anything if the front passengers are blasting 600 watts of music 🙂

Integrated body frame is just a fancy way of saying that the LR3's traditional ladder frame is aided in crash-worthiness by a body that has almost unibodylike strength. In most typical body-on-frame designs, the frame provides all the strength while the bolted-on body simply holds the passengers. The LR3's body, though, has extra strong sills that literally envelope its frame. So closely does it wrap around, in fact, that in the case of an accident, the body is forced into the frame rails greatly adding to its strength. Land Rover says that this significantly increases resistance during offset crashes, the common bugaboo of body-on-frame designs.

THATS impressive. I hate Unibody's, but in this case, a unibody on frame should be, as they say, very stiff. On the whole, I like 🙂

Whats the price of that? I didnt see it.....

Where do you see that? That is a serious jump from the $35k base price of the outgoing Discovery...

I see Touareg vs. LR3 comparisons in the works...I don't think anything else compares!

Is LR3 the final name or will it be called Discovery?

wouldn't Toureg be against the Range Rover?

I read an in-depth comparision between the Toureg V10 TDI and RR in CAR magazine. I even posted excerpts on this forum (altho it didn't garner much interest).

While the Toureg was good in all condition and excelled in on-road, but the RR just outperformed in off-road situations (the comparo was mainly about off-road performance).

And I agree, if I was in the market for an up-scale SUV...it would definately by RR. In my dreams, it would be the RR with the VW V10 TDI. But that's not happening.

Range Rover is awesome. I don't like SUV in general but I rode in one of those and its beautiful inside-out. Its so big! If I ever buy an SUV, RR will be it 🙂

If they made a turbo diesel version of the LR3, it would be perfect. Economical and stylish (IMO better looking than the range rover). And a 40k price is very competitve with other upscale SUVs.

I was thinking V8 Touareg vs. V8 LR3, since they are roughly the same price range. I don't think any of the Jap luxury brands can compare for offroading (Lexus GX or LX?) The Hummer H2 would be next in line, but I'd choose either European option over that monstrosity in a heartbeat.

looks very nice, but we musnt forget that Land Rover was rated as the least reliable manufacturer for '03 (24 per 100), was even beaten out by GM and Ford, but who knows things change

I don't know. I am sure its not as reliable as the Japanese but my parents' friend's Range Rover has been extremely reliable. He bought it 2 years ago and everytime I visit my parents, I ask him about it because reliability of European cars always gets me talking 😛
