Thet're both becoming more like Jason Bourne. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Bourne_(character)

Bond w/o gadgets, now the newest Sherlock is less professor-like and more action packed. (See trailers)

I liked Casino Royale. Bond w/o gadgets was refreshing. But as the sequels came, i wanted more and more of the old Bond. More Gadgets!

I predict the same for Sherlock. I would like the new Sherlock, but as the sequels come, i want him moving back to the old Archtype.

I guess i look foward to these Bourne clones because i'm just itching for the 4th movie in the Bourne Trilogy  to come out in 2011. (Bourne Legacy?)

Don't expect the new movie to be like the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series. Should be entertaining enough though.

I maybe wrong, but I think the original Sherlock Holmes was a fat British guy who smoked a pipe and wore a hat.

Robert had to train for 6 months just to get in shape for the movie.

In the original appearance of Holmes in a Study In Scarlet, Watson gives a list of what Holmes has knowledge in.

Knowledge of Literature — Nothing.
Knowledge of Philosophy — Nothing.
Knowledge of Astronomy — Nothing.
Knowledge of Politics — Feeble.
Knowledge of Botany — Variable. Well up in belladonna, opium and poisons generally. Knows nothing of practical gardening.
Knowledge of Geology — Practical, but limited. Tells at a glance different soils from each other. After walks, has shown me splashes upon his trousers, and told me by their colour and consistence in what part of London he had received them.
Knowledge of Chemistry — Profound.
Knowledge of Anatomy — Accurate, but unsystematic.
Knowledge of Sensational Literature — Immense. He appears to know every detail of every horror perpetrated in the century.
Plays the violin well.
Is an expert singlestick player, boxer and swordsman.
Has a good practical knowledge of British law.
(shamelessly stolen from Wikipedia, though I have the book sitting next to me)

In addition to this, in later writings Sherlock Holmes mentions that he has trained in the martial arts of "bartitsu" and even uses them against his most dangerous of foes, Professor Moriarty.

While I think that your depiction of him is a common one (he certainly wears a hat and smokes a pipe... among other things) I wouldn't describe him as fat or unfit. I think Robert will do a great job, though I would have liked to see Hugh Laurie play the role instead.

The movie will probably be entertaining, but I do not expect it to be anything like the writings or previous television series about Holmes.

Is this a completely new plot (I think it is based on it being about the fate of the entire British empire...) or is it very loosely based on one of the short stories or novels? I haven't looked at the castings to see if Professor Moriarty makes a showing in it.

Well, you have to admit that Jason Bourne is much more a badass than, say, Pierce Brosnan was as James Bond.
