So our new Nikon D70 arrived today. My wife, tami, took this cool photo tonight looking out our apartment window. Tell us what you think.

And below is a photo I took two days ago of the same view, but with my Canon G5.

yes, our sunsets are cool.

i had to take that picture with manual focus (i'm SO incredibly unfamiliar with manual controls... someone enlighten me as to where to go for information!) but it came out well. i'm not sure what that little bright blur is below the sun, but it looks cool nonetheless.

i need SLR lessons! :)

very beautiful. I'm lovin' my new Panasonic FZ5 (12x optical zoom, woot!)

Thanks! I also have a Panasonic FZ1 (2MP, 12x optical zoom, woot!), but photos taken with it are hit or miss. It's being replaced by a Canon S2 IS in July :)

Digital camera CCD's do not like direct sunlight.. You can see a splotch in that picture..

How does one get a picture like the one of the duck, where the duck is in focus, but the water is not... A special lens? Im not sure the term, but most consumer lenses are 'infinite zoom'?

Depth of focus. Lower # on the F stop. With my 50mm 1.8 lens set at 1.8 and close to my cats face, I can actually get her nose in focus and her eyes are blurred.

More common term is Depth of field (DOF) and it essentially means the distance from the focus plane that is still in focus. Your Depth of field is governed by two factors...the length of your lense and the aperture setting used. A lower Aperture numberer (a.k.a. F-Stop) will provide you with a shorter DOF, allowing you to do what Anubis has done. Similarily, the longer the lens, the the shorter the DOF field.

For Portraiture work in 35mm world, an 85mm/1.8 is an optimal lens (although everyone has their preferences).

DOF is the reason why I bought a DSLR, you can't get with a P&S, well, actually you can with the P&S in manual mode, but if you are gonna buy a P&S for their manual mode, you might as well get a SLR.
