Anyone know what the first game to appear on the PC cd rom was? The Manhole was the first game on the cd rom format for the Mac, but it didn't come out on the PC until 1994. I believe the first game came out for the PC cd rom in 1991, but I can't seem to find out what it was. On one website it says Dune was the first, but it came out in 1993. Any help appreciated.

remember when the boxes of games would say the title and then "On CD" or "On CD-ROM" to differintiate between the other version on disk.

Maybe the Journeyman Project (I think that's what it was called)
Or some game with Turbo in it's title (I think like a cab driver destruction type game).

Windows might have been the first software, but I need the first game. This website says the following;

<< In 1992 Cryo first established itself as an exciting new computer games development studio. It's main producer, Phillipe Ulrich (the brains behind the recent platformer Gift) not only created the first story game for the PC, but developed what was to be the very first computer game on CD-ROM format; Dune. >>

The only problem is that I can't find any confirmation from any other site that it was the first game to appear on the PC cd rom format. Maybe it was released in Europe on cd rom before the US?

I couldn't find anything saying that Mantis, Megarace, or Journeyman was the first.

yea i recall megarace as the first game on cd i ever got my hands on anyway, in 1993 i believe it was...At the time i lived in the netherlands, going to school there.

i got that game with my very first cdrom drive purchase: a single speed phillips drive... after a month went by and spending approx $400 for the stupid thing, a 2x drive came out.. i was like WTF GRRR

BTW back in 93 i still had a 386DX 25mhz /w 4mb ram, 80mb hard drive and with this 1x cdrom drive, the speech and gameplay in megarace was rather choppy/studdering. i was pretty dissapointed actually but still thought it was pretty cool

Sherlock Holmes did come out on cd rom in 1991, it is the closest thing I have to an answer. MobyGames says Megarace was released in 1993, could it have been released in another country earlier?

Anyone else got any ideas what it might be?

I remember when it said "cassette drive required" on the box.

I remember Sierra jumped on the CD-ROM boat towards the beginning. Their "Mixed Up Mother Goose" and "Jones in the Fast Lane" were definitely early ones.
Moby Games might have some more info.

I'm still looking into this- Iron Helix was another one early on. 7th Guest did have a "first" though, first game on CD-ROM to sell over 20,000 copies.

I'm pretty sure Star Wars: Rebel Assault[/b/] was it.

I paid $174 for a single speed cdrom I through into my 486/66 so I could play it.

<< Well I think it was Dune... at least in my country or perhaps Europe.... >>

Do you know what year it came out in Europe? It was made by a European company, so I thought it would have been released there first.

Damn, I just rechecked with my brother and now I'm in doubt about the original Dune and Loom...
I know I bought a 1x CD-Rom to play these games... but I can't remember which one was first!!

It wasn't, I don't think any of the "firsts" had FMV. Besides, Rebel Assault came out in 93 while the first PC CD-ROM games were late '91 or early '92. (in the US)
