First Food Network, now ABC

Not 240 million, but 40 million.

And Cablevision is the most evil of all the cable companies. By far.

Seems to me they have a right to be pissed about this, why should a cable company pay for a channel thats free to everyone? Especially if cablevision is the only cable company thats being forced to do so, which is what the article and OP seems to be saying

When every other NYC and surrounding area cable company put the NY Yankees new YES network on basic cable, Cablevision said no, we want to put it on premium and charge ten bucks for it. So Cablevision blacked out the Yankees for like a year, in NY City.

Cablevision is EVIL. They deserve to be targeted.

Regardless of their other discretions or your personal vendetta as a NYY fan, the information provided here - in this thread - doesnt make Cablevision evil. I think its messed if they are the only ones having to pay, and side with them here - at least in this particular instance.

Any length of wire should suffice if you are in a major metro - use a coat hanger, they are available over the air and will actually come in quite a bit better looking than the cable feed.

The article is from the NY Daily News. Its a rag. It's a sensationalist paper that no one gets their real "news" from, except those with subhuman intelligence.

Here's the New York Times with an AP byline on it:

Cablevision May Lose ABC
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
The Walt Disney Company on Monday warned Cablevision subscribers in New York that the local ABC station signal may go dark this weekend in a dispute over how much it is paid.

If the fight is not resolved, the station could go dark after midnight Saturday, affecting 3.1 million Cablevision customers’ ability to watch the Academy Awards on Sunday on ABC. The signal can still be pulled from the air by homes with an antenna and a new TV or digital converter box.

Disney is seeking $40 million a year in new fees, Charles Schueler, a spokesman for Cablevision, said in a statement. Cablevision pays more than $200 million a year to Disney.

The dispute involving WABC-TV is similar to the standoff at the end of last year between the News Corporation and Time Warner Cable over how much Fox station signals were worth. That tussle, which threatened the college football bowl season, was resolved without an interruption.

Disney said it began alerting Cablevision watchers to the impasse in ads Monday night.

The company’s previous contract with Cablevision expired more than two years ago, but the companies extended it month by month as talks continued.

Under previous arrangements, Disney was paid for cable channels like ESPN and Disney Channel, but did not charge for its ABC broadcast signal.

Why shouldn't they also get paid for ABC?

ultimately it harms the consumer who is now paying for something that disney freely broadcasts anyway.

Uh, ok. Yet, broadcast networks are hurting because they are the only networks that don't get paid by cable. If they go out of business doesn't that hurt the consumer.

Basically, you're argument is that anything that costs more hurts the consumer?
Sort of like, why should anyone have a problem with jobs going to China, since goods will cost less.

How's that workin out for America?

<sigh> Its always something with Cablevision. lol would be weird to not have ABC on the box though I don't watch the channel anyways.

I think cablevision should just drop whoever doesn't give broadcast TV for free. Its a sound business decision. Customers can just watch broadcast TV over the air if they really need it.

Why shouldn't they also get paid for ABC?

If ABC charges all other cable providers, then they should. Either that or all other Cable providers should tell ABC to pound sand like cablevision is. Why should any cable company have to pay for an OTA channel?

It also sounds like ABC is the only one who does charge, and is only charging Cablevision. Maybe I have the facts wrong, but if ABS is charging cablevision and not Comcast - its retarded. And if ABC charges companies but NBC doesn't, its also retarded.

ABC wants to charge everyone. The cable channels should give a big middle finger and drop the OTA stations.

you missed the freely broadcasts anyway.

Stop watching TV entirely IMO. Like any other addiction, once you're clean for a while you'll look back and wonder how you let yourself go so badly. 25% of the time spent watching TV is on commercials ffs.

I don't get why cable providers have to pay for network channels. They're free OTA anyway and if cable providers carry their channel, they'll reach even more viewers.

I agree, if I owned a cable provider like Cablevision here I'd tell ABC to f*ck off.

Let me get this straight. ABC should stop broadcasting over the air so they can get paid by Cablevision?

Yeah, that's one way to screw people who don't want to pay for cable.
Wait, maybe that's what Cablevision wants to do. Put free stations out of the business of providing free ota. So people would be forced to pay for cable. And since we gave them a PUBLIC FRANCHISE TO ACT IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE FRANCHISEE HOW THE FUCK IS THAT GOOD THING?

I got to side with the cable company on this one. Cable companies not only make money off of subscriber fees they also make money off of selling ads. When they rebroadcast OTA channels there's no place for them to sell ads so in effect they lose a revenue stream. On the other side the OTA channels that are rebroadcast reach more people so they can charge more for the ads so by rebroadcasting OTA channels the cable companies are actually doing them a favor. The current way of doing business is win for everyone, the way ABC wants to do business only they win.

Don't see why people are calling cablevision "evil". I get good service, low prices, and quality internet/TV. Sounds great to me.

You can't beat the triple play for 99.
