First few percent of SETI working harder than the rest?

Has anyone noticed that the first few percent of a work unit are a lot more intensive on their system than the rest of the work unit? I noticed this a couple minutes ago. My CPU fan sped up so fast I thought the computer was gonna take off or something. CPU fan was going full 4800 RPM. I watched seti, and when seti hit about 4%, the speed dropped back down to 4300.

I don't really know what the client was doing. The best I can discribe it, its there was no picture on the bottom. The red graph at the top was going really fast, and the small percentage meter at the top was going really slowly. When that got to 100%, thats when the fan slowed down again.

Does this make any sense? I hope so 😉

Yes, that sounds like what others have observed. It also sounds like you are using the GUI CLIENT with the pretty graphics.

After you tire of the "pretty graphics" you would be better off using the CLI CLIENT. It completes WUs about 40% faster than the GUI CLIENT. I guess the main reason is it doesn't have to deal with all the pretty graphics. 😛 😀

When you are ready to switch, just got to the link in my sig-line and follow the step-by-step instructions. The CLI CLIENT is a little more complicated to get going but once it is setup you are for the most part "finished". 🙂

I think we need a warning thread to warn people running the GUI thats its 40% faster to run the CLI 😉

If you're using SetiDriver, make sure you've got the thing about log files/csv files checked. Once you finish a WU, it should create a .csv file in the directory you've got Seti in 🙂

You sure know a lot for a guy not running SETI. 😛 😀

pwddesign, there is another little program that keeps up your "history" and does a better job than just looking at the setilog.CV file with EXCEL.

Check out SetiWatch 🙂

The first several % of the CLI are very intensive, too. When I had a system that was flaky, it would crash around the 4-5% point as the CPU temp would rise enough to crash it.

Confused is an SOB now.... i mean SOB'er now 😉

SETI Watch is a great program pwddesign. You'll like it. 🙂

SETI Watch says Error 2, cannot find state.sah file

Is there something I'm not doing right? I put it in the seti folder and made a shortcut like the instructions said.

Did you look to make sure there was a 'state.sah' file present in the folder where SETIWatch is placed?
What add-ons are you using, if any? If you just run the CLI by itself that won't work as the 'state.sah' file(& all the other'.sah' files) won't be copied into your main SETI folder.
Try D/Ling SETI Driver if you haven't already. that will do what needs to be done.

I am using Seti Driver. I checked myself, and there is no state.sah file. The files I have are:

Seti Driver
Seti Driver.cfg
setiathome-3.03.i386-winnt-cmdline
SETILog
SetiWatch
user_info.sah

I also have 10 folders, numbered 1-10, which I assume are for work units

I just noticed the numbered folders each have a state.sah file. So thats where its hiding. The question is, how do I get seti watch to find them?

I believe there is an option in SetiWatch for the "locations" of where to look (as it can also track networked machines too, providing the seti directory is available as shared to the network), and one of the choices is something to do with "Use caching program" or similar.

This will look within the subdirectories, and find any state.sah files, and report on the status of the WU it's currently working on. Before they added that option, you had to add each individual numbered folder 😉

Try Confused's method. it should work.
If not, check the "Use SETI Spy" or "Use SETI Driver" box in SETI Driver & that will create copies of the current WU's '.sah' files in your main SETI directory.

Ok, that worked 🙂 Thanks

I have one more question...at least for now 😉

Do I need to leave seti watch running for it to be most useful? Like, will it be able to figure out my best results if its not left running?

Thanks, and sorry for being such a pain

No, you don't need to leave it opened, i/e minimized to the taskbar. Just open it up when you want to take a look.

Scott,

I told you this was a "friendly and helpful" place ... didn't I? 🙂

BTW teammates, "pwddesign"'s Seti Name is "ScottSwingleComputers'. 😀

How did you know that?

Smokeball is psychic

Nah, not really. He's actually one of the Team Founders, and he knows everything there is to know about the Seti Team 🙂
