Hothead Games today punched its rambling epic, Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode One (phew!), with a $19.95 price tag. That's just over 30 cents a letter (colons not included), assuming cost is derived, as it is for all episodic games, by the title's length. Currently, that price applies to all versions of the game, which include PC, Mac, Linux and Xbox Live Arcade editions. 1600 Microsoft Points ($20) would be new territory for digital distribution on Xbox 360, but clearly, Hothead and its two stars have made it a point to be living on the edge.

Ultimately, I guess it depends on the length and quality of the game to determine if it is worth the $20 price. This obviously isn't your normal XBLA game.

Ya, it had best be a decent length, since they are working on 3 episodes in total, each to be $20. I personally don't really give a shit about this game, I think the PA guys are a little too cocky about their own internet status, and unless this game gets amazing reviews, I won't take a second look at it.

I'm just a cold-hearted bitch, though. :)

I'm hoping its good, but I'm not really expecting it to be. I think even they are fairly skeptical as well, but at the same time I think it will give them more insight into what goes into making a game (and how games in progress evolve). I'll wait to see, as while I like Penny Arcade, I haven't seen anything from this game that looks like its a must play, so I'll definitely see how it fares before giving it a go.

I like the humor in their strips but their columns (especially from Tycho) are pretentious as all hell. Still, I'm a sucker for turn-based RPGs and this looks like it could have some good humor to it.

it's funny how when XBLA was first discussed and when the 360 came out that they actually made it seem like $5 prices would be common w/the exception for some $10 games.

Well, again, this isn't really a XBLA game. Actually closer to PS3 selling full games like Warhawk and GT5 Prologue online. It's just using XBLA to distribute an episodic game. It is going to be $20 on the PC and Mac as well.

Though, I'll be highly disappointed if the length of the game isn't in the 8-10 hour range or greater.

I was interested in this until I saw the gameplay trailer. The endless turn-based fighting stuff looked extremely dull. I love Penny Arcade but if that's all there is, I'm not buying :(

Ya, it's kinda weird that they'll be mixing this game with the XBLA. It seem that at $20, they need to create a new category. Have the quick pick-up-and-play Arcade titles, then a section for bigger titles that are made for some lengthy playtime.

To be fair, the focus of XBLA has undergone a dramatic shift in the past year or two. If we were just talking about old arcade game ports, yeah, $5 is more appropriate. But when you start talking about entirely new games, $10-$20 doesn't seem unreasonable. Like with everything in life, you'll need to do some research before you buy, to make sure the purchase is a good value to you...
