First Drive: 4 Mb HDD

My first computer didn't even have a hard drive. It was an Apple II Plus and it had TWO floppy drives! Ownage!

I miss the good 'ole days.... Sure you had to know more about computers to set them up, but then agian if something went wrong, it was more easily fixed than it is now 🙁

No HD in my first 3 computers. Added a 20 megger with a 4 to 1 interleve (PC was too slow to read a track on one pass). $379 in 1987. Seagate Voice Coil MFM drive.

same here. I remember right before it failed that 20 out of the 40MB were marked as bad sectors in scandisk. 😛 it eventually got to the point where it would no longer boot and it refused to let me reformat it. the drive lasted 7 years. not bad...

i wish i remember how much hard drive i had on my 486 win 3.11 machine... i know my second computer, a 150mhz packard bell, had around 1GB, and my third computer, a 200mhz PII dell dimension, had 1. something GB.

was that the one that you used a cassette player with? a friend of mine had one. i think that was the first flight sim i played on, or something from tandy. it was like stick figure flight sim 😀

The first PC compatible I used was 5 1/2 inch floppies only XT. LOW DENSITY!!

I then had a 25Mhz 386DX with an 80mb disk. I was the biggest disk in the company.

A 286 there had one of those 'Hard cards'. It was a 20Mb hdd on an ISA board and was slower than a Glacier.

My first was a 2000+ AXP, 256mb RAM, gf4mx440, 20GB Seagate, 17'CRT 😱

same rig i run today, except it's at 2.1Ghz, 1024mb of RAM, 9800 Pro, dual 17'CRT, and 200GB of HDD space, plus a SBLive!24-bir and my  DViCO HDTV tuner 😉

I still remember ordering my first soundcard/CDROM combo, it was a 2x CDROM drive, and an 8-bit Soundblaster, with unamplified speakers. Got it for like $100 from some mail-order catalog (America Direct?), and I was like 10 at the time. Took me days to get it working, but then I enjoyed Carmen Sandiego, with sound!

I remember when my parents got me my first computer, a C-64. I was so happy that I starting writing a basic program immediately. It worked great and then I realized that we hadn't bought the data cassette drive (the computer was enough of an expense that we couldn't afford the cassette drive at the same time).

So, no storage for the win... I think. 😱

My first actual HD was a 30 MB MFM HD. It was so much faster than the dual floppy setup at the university.

One fun thing I used to do was copy the tape programs to a blank tape using the dual cassette deck on my family's stereo system. 🙂
