First Drive: 2005 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid

Up to 13% improved fuel economy
Hot DAMN! This is better than cold fusion!!!

I remember reading about this thing a long time ago and being unimpressed with it then. I am now too. 13% is just a total farce. What a surprise that chevy's attempt at hybrid technology falls on its ass when compared with the japs!

17 mpg / 19 mpg vs 14 mpg / 16 mpg (from Edmunds themselves)

Well spank my ass and call me Charlie. WOOOOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEEEEE

Useless. A mobile power generator with power outlets. I'm sooooooooo impressed.
Yeah, who will they sell this piece of filth to? Its gas economy is marginal to the extent it would take, by my estimation 123442 years to break even compared to a non-hybrid, so then the only market is people who need a generator and/or sockets. Considering most people in construction solved that problem years ago, and for much less money, we're left with this truck only being used by eskimos who need to cut their bricks of ice far away from civilization.

Contractors will buy it, really.

Are those tested numbers or EPA?

Cuz hybrids are notorious for not living up to their promised efficiencies.

How would it be better than a diesel, which many truck buyers have no problem with, paired with a separate generator? It seems like demo technolgy that sucks. I hope chevy goes bankrupt and this represents the pivotal thing that did them in as a company.

Hmmm...I would hope that government contractors make it their work truck of choice. After all, if the beaureaucrats are gonna waste loads of money anyway, they might as well be promoting hybrid power in the process.

If this qualifies for tax credits then it has definitely incentives😉

I don't think this truck will qualify tho since it doesn't really have any electric drive assist.

Becoming moot anyway as the hybrid deduction is slowly disappearing. 2005's return is the last one you can deduct up to $2k per vehicle on. Next year, it will be $500 and for 2007, nothing.

I wont, although I get a hint of sarcasm in your post. 🙂

Most contractors are self-employed, so gas, as a business expense, comes right off the top on tax day anyway.

The truck I have now averagea about 16-17MPG in real world driving, so I cant imagine that an extra 1-2 MPG would make a huge difference anyway. I just wish they would put 100 gallon gas tanks on trucks to eliminate stopping for gas 3 times a week.

I dunno. I guess maybe its my own preference. I've always preferred Chevy full-size trucks...not really sure why though😛

You can always get a kit for that😛

yeah, but it's powered by those generators. I can finally complete my dream of having a fridge in my truck. jk

No, there's kits out there for like 6000 watt generators that are powered by the engine.
