GM = Attack of the Clones!! The only GM clone I'd ever consider driving is something based on their Saab/Epsilon platform...

Though lately Ford has been playing this game too...Explorer, Mountaineer AND Aviator?? I bet we'll soon have a Jaguar SUV on top of the Explorer platform...

You want to know what's sad??? GM has already approved a new Saab SUV based on the same Trailblazer platform (possibly using a Northstar V8). Makes me want to PUKE!:disgust:

each car appeals to a different demographic of customers. Older customers go for buick, while younger ones go for chevy for example.

That gives us:

Trailblazer
Envoy
Bravada
Ascender
Rainer

Similar yet different, each fit a different niche, and do it quite well at that.

Quite well?? You might want to wipe that grin off your face ;)

The Trailblazer and Envoy I can sorta understand...high end and low-end. Even so, there is a bit of price overlap. 100,000/48,000 respectively so far this year.
The Bravada is a lame excuse. Oldsmobile is dead, so why even bother with the SUV. I think they've killed it already. 3,900 units sold this year...pitiful
The Ascender is a lame attempt at reviving Isuzu's sales with a rebadged Envoy. Note to GM, there IS NO SAVING Isuzu. They are dead in the water. The Ascender is one of the WORST selling SUV's on the market. Only sold 1,600 units since January.
The Rainier is another lame attempt to milk the cow.

And NOW, they are going to do a Saab SUV on the same platform?? And GM wonders why they have to give so many discounts and why their vehicles sit on the lot. TOO MUCH MARKET SATURATION with TOO MANY SIMILAR PRODUCTS!!!

GM and Ford need to learn how to differentiate their models using a SINGLE platform, they could save a bunch of money right off the bat. Look at Toyota:

Camry
Avalon
Solara
Highlander
Sienna
ES300
RX330

Just looking at them, you'd never know they shared the same basic chassis/powertrain. You've got three sedans, a coupe, two SUV's and a minivan. Intead of sharing sheetmetal and interior parts, GM and Ford needs to buckle down and start setting things straight. I mean, where else could you go and find the same basic dash in an Escalade that you see in an $18,000 Chevy pickup? ;)

I mean, who is going to be fooled into believing that this is nothing more than a Ford Escape tarted up for numbnuts who don't have a clue?

Mercury Mariner

Badge engineering is suck!!!!

Anyone hate that dash ?
It's always been the same dash in all their cars..

it doesn't even go with the car at all... I dont understand why they don't change it.

Look at the center... it's stereo is black and so are the AC panels.. Are they just one unit ?

Camry, Avalon, and ES300 are pretty obvious IMO.

They look nothing alike, have completely different interiors and exteriors, and don't share any external body panels/glass/interior trim parts (well, with maybe the exception of steering wheels on the Avalon and Camry). Even further with interiors, the ES300 is leaps and bounds ahead of the Camry and Avalon. Can't say that for the Trailblazer vs Rainier.

The ES300 and Avalon are straight up ugly IMHO. The Camry looks normal.

I think the Avalon is OK, but how come when I see an ES300 driving down the road, I always say "there goes an expensive Camry"

B/C you know what the underlying chassis is with the ES300 ;) Most people who see an ES300 just say, there goes a nice Lexus. I think to myself, there's the ugliest car that Lexus makes! :D

But seriously though, I think that GM needs to invest into a NICE singular platform that can be used for a wide range of applications. The Sigma platform is a nice start (CTS, STS, SRX).

I just find the fact that Toyota can build 7 distinctly different vehicles with 5 distinct personalilities (sedan, coupe, convertible, SUV, minivan) on one common platform quite amazing.

I think the Sigma is a great start, and the Epsilon will follow that nicely.

Yeah, the new Grand Am should highlight that platform. The new Delta platform (Saturn Ion) isn't getting much love though.

It would have, except the Grand Am is getting renamed :/ And, the Delta platform is going to be applied for the Cavalier (name axed) replacement, dubbed the "Cobalt". Look for that to have a 220hp SS version, aimed to compete with the SRT-4. I only have one spied pic, and it doesn't detail it much. Let me see if I can find it and get a link up...

Did anybody notice this Buick will get a 5.3L V8. Also the Buick gets a lot more sound deadening panels then the trailblazer and maybe Envoy.

So it may look like the Trailblazer, it is something new. I have driven the trailblazer and envoy and like them alot, once you see how much power they make and with doscounts and 0% apr are a very good deal.

"It doesn't hurt Rainier that it's the only member of the midsize GM SUV family to get the Vortec 5.3-liter V8 in the short-wheelbase, five-seat configuration. With those other models, you have to go to the longer and heavier seven-seat versions to upgrade from the 4.2-liter inline six.

The 4.2-liter six puts out 275 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 275 pound-feet of torque at 3,600 rpm, and it must be pointed out that 90 percent of that torque is available at virtually all points on the tachometer. Anyone who knows this engine well is a big fan, and that would include us.

But the V8 delivers 290 hp at 5,200 rpm and 325 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, with most of that available across a wide rpm range, and that is simply more power at any given time, which is attractive to a lot of people, also including us. "

Indeed, the 4.2L is a SWEET engine, which is also why its on Ward's 10 best.

Well the new 4cyl and 5cyl truck motors are based off that one. In fact I think it is like 50-70% shared parts between the motors.

The truck that is replacing the S10 is getting the 4 and 5cyl motors.
