It doesn't fit into the "mini SUV" category. As for why? The CEO of Porsche NA tells you why in the article.

From the article:
Equally impressive that Porsche built an SUV that drives like a sports car is that it built a sports car that can drive like an SUV. Part of our driving experience in the Cayenne included an off-road jaunt that would have left most other luxury SUVs (read: BMW X5 4.6is, Mercedes-Benz ML55) in the mud. The Cayenne has been engineered with a ridiculously high level of off-roading ability. The 8.5 inches of ground clearance in the S model with standard suspension is reasonable for moderate off-roading, but the optional ($3,200 with PASM ? but standard on the Turbo) air suspension adds 2.3 inches for a maximum of 10.8 inches ground clearance. Combined with the Cayenne's low-range all-wheel-drive mode, this allows it to crawl, traverse and mount an amazing array of rugged obstacles. During our off-road drive, we plowed through hub-deep mud, drove up and down severe muddy hills without slippage and bumped over rocky trails without ever bottoming out. In one position, with the axles articulated to form an X, the Cayenne had only one wheel on muddy terrain but was able to move forward.
Nice.:D

Also, the seats are comfortable and the Cayenne provides a multitude of creature comforts, including a 35-watt, 14-speaker Bose surround sound audio system, the first in any vehicle.

Not much of a stereo, though, huh?

Not a loud stereo but a quality one, Bose makes crystal clear audio components. Chances are you won't rattle the trunk lid of the car behind you but I don't think they were going for the teen inspired make your ears bleed sound that seems to be popular these days.

Not in my MDX. The Bose stereo is a POS and it's an option too. It sounds like its underwater. My Lexus stereo was 10x better.

I think Porsche should get a spanking for making this pile... why would a prestigious company such as Porsche.... make stupid SUV?

very mental.. IMO.

Methinks Bose & Porsche have some sort of agreement or contract... "No high, no lows... must be Bose"
And the article considers other luxury "SUVs" and the offroad capability like Knightbreed mentioned... it should be noted that the X5 wasn't designed for offroading at all... the ML in general is just an overpriced POS. They should compare it to the Audi Allroad or the new VW SUVs, mebbe even the new Infiniti FX as well.

The Cayenne is pretty ugly compared to it's competitors too. They may not have as much power but you gotta be off your rocker to want this. I'd rather have a real sport truck/SUV. Or a real luxury boat SUV like a Navigator or Escalade.

Yeah it's ugly and yeah it's a Porsche SUV but damn that thing is cool. Badass road performance, awesome handling AND impressive off-road ability.

Did any of you bother to read the whole article?!?!?! I think you missed the jist of what the author was trying to say.

Sure it might be ugly, and yes it's a SUV, what else is wrong with it? IMHO, it excels in every catagory and blows the compettition away.
