First Date Conversation No-No's

I pinched this from a link via MSN. 😀

Excerpted from Dating: A Survival Guide from the Frontlines by Josey Vogels (Raincoast Books, 1999).

What not to talk about on a first date:

? "Diseases or illnesses, obsessive behavior, friends in jail."

? "Exes."

? "Medical problems that mean he can't have children. (It happened. Honest.)"

? "Bodily functions."

? "Details about failed personal relationships."

? "How much you hate your family."

? "How you were dumped by all your former girlfriends."

? "Politics, religion or sexuality." (Jeez, tough customer.)

? "Family problems."

? "Your favorite sexual positions."

? "Past boyfriends, past dates, dead cats, negative ideas."

? "Cars. Some guys can talk about their goddamn vehicle for hours." (I hear ya, Unless you're a car freak too, car talk is boring!)

? "How much money you make or spend."

? "Financial difficulties."

? "How I should run my life, according to you!"

Any you disagree with?

So what ARE you supposed to talk about? Doesn't look like there is much left.😉

I know! I must have talked about half of these things. But it makes for interesting conversation I think. I regard the first date as an interview, to be quite honest.

Exactly what are you supposed to talk about? Sex and the city? Some stupid reality show?

I find it very hard to hold a conversation, since most of my interests for good conversation are into world economics and news, politics or other matters that would make the ordinary person get bored.

This goes beyond first dates, though, how do you maintain a conversation with someone from a completely different line of work, or past experience? I suck at this social skills thing..

Good tips, I don't think politics can necessarily be THAT bad, you just have to be able to agree with what the other person is saying at least to some point/view/

Not everyone gets bored discussing politics, but such subjects generally do little else than elicit an argument. Starting a first date by pointing out your dogmatic differences is hardly a good move.

More often than not, if the girl or guy is interested enough, one will ask about their past relationship's. You don't have to go into great detail about them, but you can't just say "I don't want to talk about it" either.

If your asked, then tell. If not, don't bring it up for the sake of conversation on. I agree to that.

Unfortunately that is kinda the wrong way to approach it. You're there to have fun and be yourself.

I always say "we can talk about that later. I am here to focus on you. Read any good books lately?"

schwing!!! Dodged that one.

Geez that makes for a boring 1st date 😛

What fun is it if you can't talk about dead kittens?

Go ahead and talk about dead kittens. But when you go home, you'll be killing more of them.

Rule #1. People like to talk about themselves. Get her to talk about herself and she'll start glowing, etc.

I guess you'll just have to talk about your crazy theories that the Moon Landing and scenes from the Holocaust were filmed at NBC studios in Burbank, CA.

I have yet to be on a first date that not one of those topics got brought up.

I suppose to follow this your date will need to be following the same rules.
