New at this, but educated myself enough to the point where i felt safe assembling a computer without blowing it up.

Installed Everything, turned it on, installed XP, and i've been getting some weird errors. Like I'll put in Max Payne and it loads up everything up until i go to "new game" then it drops me to desktop. It also wont allow me to install 3dmark. Which leads me to believe its a problem between the mobo and the vid card possibly.

Here is the way my BIOS is set up atm:

I dunno I'll be trying to figure this out for the next few days, this might be a simple fix of changing a BIOS setting, or perhaps more complicated.

I appreciate any help beforehand, and any other questions/comments.

thanks!

Fisrt off, go here and make certain you followed these steps when installing everything and if not res the drive and start over carefully following the instructions given. Looking@your bios settings increasing your AGP aperture size from 64mb to 128mb or 256mb since you have so much ram and a 128mb card wouldn't hurt, and try disabling fast writes in ati's smartgart. I don't think the 4x vs 8x for AGP capability should be an issue but you can install the new ATI catalyst 3.2 drivers, DX9, and everything else in the order the gudie suggests fro best results. While you're at Asusboards look around and you may see the fix for the problem your having. Good luck and post back what happens 🙂

BTW, Welcome to the forums 😀

many games(and 3dmark for that matter) have issues with memory timings being too aggressive, have you tried setting all your memory timings to auto and tested that way. I had a similar problem with my system because I was overclocking the fsb and some programs had issues with the mem being out of specs.

yikes, looks like im going to the store and getting some mt dew, lol

i didnt install the OS or anything in any particular order, ill do what the link says then come back and report

my ati drivers failed a couple times on startup, still getting the same errors after installing in the correct order via that guide

ill try setting my memory to auto and a couple other things tonight when i have the time

Warcraft III ran just fine, which i thought was sort of weird since 3dmark and Max Payne had so much trouble

messed something up with zonealarm and motherboard monitor 5 though and my comp boots reaaaaaaaaaaaly slow so going to do that other install

think ill try out asheron's call 2, ghost recon, etc see how they run

Just for grins, download Memtest86. Unpack the file, read the readme.txt. You'll end up with a floppy you can boot from that will automatically test your memory.

It's simple to do, it's a great utility to have around and it's free! 🙂

Plus you'll know whether your memory is good or bad.

also try updating xp, getting the latest drivers for your video card and all of your other devices. Also, next time you reboot from a crash, go into event viewer(control panel>administrative tools) and see if you can find an error message that might key you in to the problem

Well evidently they sent me the wrong vid card (not that it makes much of a diff as far as my problems go), they sent me a Evil Commando 2 radeon 9700 pro instead of the brand-name ati radeon 9700 pro i ordered, related link:

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=1003486

So once that's all sorted out and i get my new card (or they screw me over and i have to use this one...allthough its a good card just not the one i ordered) ill get back to troubleshooting.

I used Memtest on my athlon machine and its a neat little program, thanks
