First Build

I was planning on getting a job (or two) this summer, and I'm expecting to be making a good amount of money. My idea was to spend it on something I'd like to make a hobby of: computers. I also game, so I thought I'd go big. I'll go by the guidelines.

Use: High-end graphics gaming for a few years to come
Price: $2500 tops
Parts Origin: United States, preferably
Brand: No preference
Stock/Overclock: I don't know how to overclock, or I would
Resolution: Highest possible
Time of Build: End of Summer

I have a build in mind right now, but I am still vague on things like which motherboard do I need? is the i7 extreme worth the extra $ over i7? Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Current build idea:
2 - Radeon HD 6950 2GB Crossfired - $250 each
i7-2600K 8GB - $320
Over 800W PSU
Cooler Master HAF X Case - $185
Obviously all can change

By the time you get your summer job and have the money for your rig, all the parts you listed will be replaced with something newer.

Translation: Save your money with the plan to use it on a computer. Once you are a week from actually ordering the parts, come back and create your thread. We'll gladly help you then.

Obviously. The graphics card choice has already changed, and the CPU choice may have changed by the time you get your first paycheck.

And the extra price would be worth the performance? I've looked into ivy bridge and it doesnt seem worth it, i know that much.

Once Ivy Bridge is out, Sandy Bridge won't be worth it at the same price points.

I think you're thinking about Core i5-2500K versus Core i7-2600K.

There is no extra price. The i7-3770K will be priced the same as it's Sandy Bridge counterpart, and will perform about 10% better while consuming less power (and will likely overclock better as well).

The only way you'll see a price advantage with Sandy Bridge is if you commit to buying used.

This is pretty much a pipe dream thread at this point, let's do it for real once you have the money in hand.
