So yeah, after quite a bit of research I've come up with this setup. I plan on OCing it to 3200+ or more if I can, and I plan on playing games such as Halflife 2 and all of the other new games coming out. I'd like some suggestions on changing it if nesessary, and though price is of some object I can probably put more into it if it's worth it. Still, looking for a good deal on most of the parts, so when the newer A64's come out in the new socket 939 I can just upgrade the motherboard and processor and it will be all set. Anyways...

AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Mobile- $99
ABIT NF7-S - $86
Samsung 1GB (2 x 512) PC-3500 - $192
Western Digital Raptor 36.7 gig 10,000 rpm serial - $111
Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM - $76
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro - $204
Lite-On Black 52X32X52 CD-RW Drive- $31
Sony Black 1.44MB 3.5inch Floppy Disk Drive - $13
Antec P-160WF (2 120mm fans) - $120
ENERMAX 460W Power supply - $80
Logitech BLACK Optical Desktop - $24
Altec Lansing 221 2.1 Speaker System - $40

Total: $1,076

Also, how would you rate this system out of 100?

what heatsink fan are you going to put on your chip?

if that is a retail chip, i dont know about OCing with just the stock HS/F.
if its not retail you need a HS/F.

out of 100, i would give that system a 95.786944848

Your reseach payed off dude, that's an awesome system, especially considering it's your first build. The only things I don't like are the speakers and the mouse. I would get a Logitech MX310 mouse and a set of Logitech speakers that fit my budget (how's that for brand loyalty??).

90/100.

That's all stock heatsink and fans, so what do you guys suggest?

I can't seem to find just a Logitech keyboard, just a keyboard/mouse combo. I was considering the MX300 as I don't think I need that many buttons on a mouse, but then again there is always time to upgrade the extras.

Looks pretty nice. Not much I would change, in fact. The PSU looks a bit overkill, 350-400W should be more than enough. Might also want to consider a better mouse like the MX510 or MX700, depending on whether you want wireless.

For an HSF, consider the following:

Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu
Thermalright SLK947U
Thermalright SP-97 (this is basically the above with heatpipes)

Of course, these are the best socket A HSFs bar none and their cost reflects that ($40-$50), but the only thing you'd save going with something less is like $10, and I honestly can't see how that's worth it.

Actually IIRC the Zalman may have compatibility issues with the NF7, so one of the Thermalrights + a fan.

Well, with all that other hardwares that he spent his money on, that's probably all he can afford

thermalright is probably your best bet for the HS.
get a panaflo fan and you'll be set as far as HS/F goes

i got a slk 900a ( not the newest model, but adequate) a few months back and a panaflo m1a fan for 35 bucks IIRC.

oops, XP, not FX. So many letters...

I'm going with the cheaper Thermalright SLK947U as it should be plenty. I can't find a fan that will work though, as I know nothing about heatsinks and fans for them. Can someone point the way to me?

Alright, after taking all of the suggestions into consideration I've come up with this revised version. It's obviously not final, but it's certainly better.

AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Mobile- $99
ABIT NF7-S - $86
Samsung 1GB (2 x 512) PC-3500 - $192
Western Digital Raptor 36.7 gig 10,000 rpm serial - $111
Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM - $76
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro - $204
Lite-On Black 52X32X52 CD-RW Drive- $31
Sony Black 1.44MB 3.5inch Floppy Disk Drive - $13
Antec P-160WF (2 120mm fans) - $120
Antec 430W Power Supply- $60
Logitech MX310 Optical Mouse - $25
Logitech Elite Keyboard - $30
Logitech Z640 5.1 Speakers- $53
Thermalright SLK-947U Copper Heatsink - $40
Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 2M - $14

Total: $1,154

The WD 80GB harddrive is actually SATA. The price defines it on my list, as I'm buying from Newegg.

Apparently I'm now a Logitech man.

Bottom heatsink and fan are for the processor, I hope I don't blow up my system by doing the fan wrong.

Okay, any suggestions?

...and again, how would you guys rate this system out of 100? Complete honesty is the best for me obviously, as it's a lot of money.

I would say.... 75/100. But for one person it's weak, for another it's overkill.

You can play any game except for far cry @ 1280x1024 with max details at playable frame rates.

I mean, there are people with overclocked 3.2 GHz Northwood's, 4 SCSIs on RAID @ 14k RPMS+, Duel Raptors on RAID, motherboards with 2-4 Firewires/ 6-8 USB 2.0's/ Duel BIOS/ GB lan with onboard firewall, DDR600, A64 FX's, Quad - 8-way Opterons, X800Pros, soon to be 6800 Ultras, with water cooling cases and 6.1 surround sound.etc etc..

You would basically be better off putting a down payment on a new car.
