First build won't post, no display... please help

Hi, I am doing my first build and have been following mechBgon's guide. Here are my components:

DFI Lanparty ultra-d
opteron 165
thermalright xp-120 hsf with 84 CFM panaflo
evga 6600GT
G.Skill 2x1GB PC4000 ram
Antec True Power 2.0 550W

I was grounded throughout installation. I have the standard 24 pin power plugged in and the 4-pin 12v. I installed the xp-120 on the opteron to a tee. It pushes a little harder down on the processor than I thought it would, but thermright claims they are compatible.

When I press the power button on the mobo, all the fans start working, but I don't get any display. The red diagnostic lights flicker between the first 3 and all 4 being on. After 10 seconds the fans power down to a slower speed and all but the first LED turn off. This has happened twice. I don't know what these codes mean. Both times I powered down as soon as the other LED's turned off. What should I do?

Did you notice the floppy+4pin molex between cpu+first PCI-E x16 slot? I'm not completely sure they are required but I plugged them in anyway. What color Ram slots are you using?

Edit: Make sure the 6600GT also gets a molex, forgot that when I put in a bfg 6600gt at first.

yeah, all of those power cables are in and taken care of

I am using a single 1GB in the orange DIMM slot fartherst from the CPU. The other time I tried I put it in the yellow.

Any advice?

Try with just mobo, processor, one stick of ram, and video, and see if it posts to bios.

EDIT: heatsink too! No hard drive though.

Thank-you, yes I have had all four of those power inputs properly connected since my first boot attempt.

any other ideas?

Since I don't have the DFI manual on hand, I can't check this before asking: does the manual suggest a particular slot for using a single module? If so, it may matter, so check that. Also, if you have a "plain-vanilla" module you can try in there, give that a try too, any old PC2100 or faster module.

Try it outside of the case, motherboard might be shorting on a standoff (unless you're using plastic).

Well, thanks for trying to help me. Both of those suggestions are things I've considered. The board is sitting on the case it came with outside of the case. I don't have any other memory sticks to try, but DFI manual and support website say to use the outer DIMM slots, which I am.

I JUST WANT IT TO DISPLAY. ugh.

1) Do you happen to have an old 1MB Cirrus Logic PCI video card (or similar) that you could try in a standard PCI slot, as a fact-finding step?

2) Checked the monitor cable for bent pins, and/or tested the monitor just lately on a different system?

3) If your eVGA card has both VGA and DVI plugs, which plug is your monitor attached to?

Try some basic stuff > CMOS reset > rearrange cabling > pull the CPU and put it back > swap the RAM sticks > pull keyboard / mouse / etc that are not vital > try without the video card also, see if it powers down etc. A lame question, it's not sitting DIRECTLY on the case, is it? 🙂 I know, but I had to ask.

Extra: the front panel isn't connected is it? Make sure you start the mobo directly (screwdriver etc)

That jogged my memory to ask one more thing: checked to ensure that you've got the keyboard plugged into the keyboard hole? If you plug it into the mouse port (green) then various dumb stuff can happen, including no-POST.

No, I don't think I can get one either.

Cable and monitor are fine, I am using them now with older system.

3) If your eVGA card has both VGA and DVI plugs, which plug is your monitor attached to?

VGA only, so VGA

CMOS reset > rearrange cabling > pull the CPU and put it back > swap the RAM sticks > pull keyboard / mouse / etc that are not vital > try without the video card also, see if it powers down etc

I am going to look up CMOS reset because I'm not sure what that is or how to do it. In the meantime I will try to put the CPU in again. I've already swapped the RAM stick around. BRB.

EDIT - kb and mouse are in proper connections

Any other ideas? Is the processor just dead?

Other ideas? Yeah 🙂 We surely could entertain you for a few days 🙂 Check if you plugged the CPU fan to the right spot. Don't know wether a DFI Lanparty starts if it's not plugged correctly or not but certainly wouldn't be an effort to check. Surely something blatantly obvious. I wouldn't worry much. Just take care not to ruin anything.

Addition: I mean don't let the dark side overwhelm you. You surely know the story involving Yoda. Ehhhhhhhhhhh Any progress?

K I'm trying to breath, thanks a lot Kyanzes. The fan over the processor is plugged into the "CPU fan" input. The system, including all fans, will actually come on, I just get no display and no post. I get no beeps.

My cousin had a similar problem. Turns out the case was shorting and frying the mobo.

There's a chance that your mobo has been fried by your case. try a new case and mobo...or try a new mobo, but install it all on some cardboard, and run it like that. if it works, its likely your mobo/case.

Is it a "LANPARTY UT nF4-D" ? If it has two PCI-E connectors then you should use the one closer to the CPU?

I think I found the problem, motherboard and videocard aren't compatible. I can't plug in the 6600GT without still seeing gold connectors when I look at it from the side. This is because the fan on the DFI board blocks the full connection of the card. This seems like a huge problem. I have heard of it before, but the cards will still worked in those cases. I guess on my specific evga 6600gt it is just enough so that it won't.

Okay well here's a much easier question. If I use the other slot, the second PCI slot, with the card, where it can plug in all the way, it should still power up the card so that that card's fan spins right? Can you always just use this second slot? I guess if the card won't turn on (ie it's fan won't spin) in the second slot, does this mean my card is dead? Or does it just mean that if I want to use it as the only one, do I have to change any jumpers or other settings? thanks!

There's no way you could gently but firmly nudge it into place? I have an EVGA 7800GT that pretty much touches the DFI chipset fan, but it's all good because that end is flat. Oh and if you got a 89CFM panaflo, (M1A ? as in same as mine?) I'm pretty sure they advise NOT to plug it into the CPU_fan header as the M1A draws too much power and would ultimately blow out that header.
