Mobo: P55 LE LGA 1156 p55 ATX Motherboard - $119.99 after rebate

CPU: Core i5 650 Processor Boxed - $139.99

CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 Plus Universal CPU Cooler - $29.99

RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB DDR3 1600 - $105.99

GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 - $69.99 after rebate and coupon code

Hard Drive: Spinpoint F3 500GB - $55

Case: Rosewill Destroyer Mid ATX Tower - $59.99

PSU/Optical Drive: OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W + Lite-On DVD/CD - $53.99

Total: $635.91

The Mobo, CPU, and CPU cooler are from Microcenter in-store.

I'm a bit iffy on the PSU and case...Any suggestions/advice would be great!

thanks for the response!

i caved into a friend's advice and am thinking of going for the i5 750 at 140 and a better corsair psu which is 35 after rebate. Additionally i would get a new optical drive at $24

That brings my total up to $640 but i get a better psu and a quad core... worth it?

Where are you getting an i5-750 for $140?

And ya, outside of needing the on-chip graphics, there are very few practical reasons to go with an i5-650 over a 750 or i7-860 for a little more (microcenter). If it came down to money, I'd go with a cheaper H55 mobo and getting the better cpu.

turns out i was still quoting the 650 price 🙁

There's a nice i5 750 and ram combo on newegg for 296. it's one of the cheapest combos for the i5 750.

on a sidenote, the price of ram has really been on the rise though... 100 for 4gb appears to be the norm nowadays.

any cheaper p55 mobo suggestions?

No expert here, but newegg has an Asrock and Gigabyte P55 boards for ~$100 shipped. Those two brands are usually safe bets most of the time. Don't know what features you're looking for.

Back to the original post, for a mid-tower case in that price range, I'd go with an Antec 300 or a CoolerMaster RC 590 or RC 690, but it is a personal preference.

Drop the 6xx for the 750. You don't really need what it has to offer. Also, I'd go with the Antec 300. The builds I've done out of it feel incredibly roomy for a $55 case.

This thread has a serious lack of important questions such as whether you plan on overclocking, what will you be doing with the computer, and what resolution monitor you will be using if you plan on gaming.

If you plan on doing much gaming you should probably get a Phenom II x3 720 and a cheap MB combo from MC and spend the saved money on a 5770.

since this is my first build, i don't plan on excessive overclocking but i was planning on it, considering the cpu cooler.

i'm currently gaming on a 8600m gt and wanted to witness graphics beyond medium-low... i thought a 4850 would suffice my budgetary needs and was thinking about getting a slightly better mobo/cpu combo so that i could just pop in a better gpu in the future.

gaming would be the purpose of this computer though

Here is a 720BE/Gigabyte 785g combo for $162.

With it you can almost 🙂)) hit your budget with a $300 HD 5850. If your goal is to "...witness graphics beyond medium-low..." it should not be a problem - LOL

as tempting as the 5850 is, i don't think my gaming needs or budget require anything more than that 4850. i was actually thinking about getting the x3 720 be instead of the i5 750. i really don't need that much computing power and it could end up knocking this machine down to sub-$600, allowing me to purchase a monitor so i can see what my computer is rendering and stuff

as for the mobo, i would like to CF sometime in the future. i was looking at this one.

also found some cheaper ram via tigerdirect. it's at 12.3% cashback right now hence why i'm not pairing the mobo with some ram on newegg.

As I posted in the other thread, it might be more worthwhile if you are getting that AMD Phenom system, to buy a prebuilt from bestbuy. Sub $600 with a 5850 is definitely doable.
