first build keeps shutting down!

Ok heres the deal. My new comp keeps shutting down, mostly during gaming, which is its primary purpose. According to SpeedFan, ambient and CPU temps never rise over 40C. Voltage levels stay flat. Ran it through PassMarks BurnInTest at 100% load and it ran flawlessly, with no errors. It also shut down while performing 7byte's BurnIn64 Fast Fourier Transform Test. During a gaming session, (CoD on highest settings, for instance), it will shut down. My only guess is the vid card which is at the top of the case, due to its design. There isnt much circulation up there, because most of the air flow is directed over the mobo. Im still new to this, but nothings blown up yet!

Heres my setup, no overclocking, stock timings and voltages:

Athlon 64 +3200
Enermax Liberty 500w
Biostar Tforce 6100-939
Corsair XMS 1GB (2x512)
Geforce 7800GT pcie
WD 250 sataII

A slot fan below the video card might draw more cool air closer to the card. You can search for and get a slot fan for under $10 shipped from newegg.com

What are your video card temps? If it's shutting down while doing a Fourier transform, it probably isn't your video card. I'd run memtest86 first and see if that's the problem.

59c is not hot for a 7800GT, did you install drivers from CDs or websites? you should definately get the most up to date drivers online.

Never install from the CDs that come with the hardware, its almost always outdated by a few generations of drivers.

Good point. sure enough the drivers are from the disc. Ill update all drivers and see if that dosent help

usually you will need to burn a CD with all of your needed drivers, or at least the basics like chipset/lan/windows service packs/etc

You can also use Nlite from www.nliteos.com to customize your windows install to include all of the drivers for your particular PC and remove all windows components you never use.

never connect to an insecure network without proper antivirus or firewall software

Firewall software didnt even exsist a few years ago

And if you arent opening pictures called OMGLOL.exe youre pretty safe from viruses while installing drivers too...

If you are super paranoid however, you can always get AVG virus scanner for free.
