Hi, folks. I am a newbie and this is my first build.
Ths is what i have so far.
Antec ks 282 with 300w ps.
Abit KR7A Rad mobo
Crucial Micron 256mb 2100 ddr
Gainward GeForce 4 128MB golden sample video card
IBM 40gb 120 GXP hdd
Lite On 52x cd rom drive
fdd from antique computer
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
XinRuiLian Model XRL-HS 1800G cpu hs and cooler

I went to set up and configured it the way I wanted it and it went fine for about 15-20 min then it just froze.

I was checking the halth status and it seems it freezes when the cpu temp reaches 57 degrees centegrade.

Is that temp too high for an Athlon 2000?

Thanks for the help.

Well that temperature is likely to be off since the Abit KR7A can't moniter temperatures directly from the die. Also you aren't really saying what heatsink your using but 57c does sound a tad high, especially if your just sitting there in the BIOS. Your going to want to look into replacing that. I have my 1.4 @ 1.6 right now and its only doing 43c @ max load (Prime and seti running).

I'm not saying this to be an ass but did you use thermal paste between the Heatsink and the processor?

Well here is the list of coolers made by that company. I don't know which one you are using but as far as i can tell none of them are rated for anything over an AMD Athlon XP 1600+

Thanks for the input, guys. I had a suspicion it was the heatsink that was causing probs.

To further explain the prob, I don't have an OS yet,so I was messing around in the setup mode. Thats when it started freezing up.

The heatsink came with the cpu, and the hs compound was already appled to the hs.

Looks like I will be ordering a better hs with better hs compound.

Thanks again. I'll keep you posted.

First, just reseat the heatsink and try it again. That helps most of the time and can save you money and time. Also, sometimes a sink will say rated to 1700+ because that was the fastest processor at the time. So the heatsink is probably fine if you don't overclock.
