Hello!

Finally completed my first build...... Everything went really well, and I only had a few problems (one of which is quite hilarious..... Will share later!).

Just wanted to say thanks for your help, and especially to mechBgon for his awesome guide for first time builders...... That info really came in handy!

Here are a few pics of the new computer....

BoboonGuy is correct..... I went with the Antec Sonota case with it's own 380W power supply.

Okay, now for the hilarious problem I encountered (I probably shouldn't even tell this on myself, but wtf!)

A little background info before I start....

Up until about one month ago, I had never even looked inside a computer case.... My neighbor has built three now, and was always telling me about his experiences. I love to tinker with almost anything, and he finally got me interested enough to go for it..... I had an offer from him to help me anytime I needed it, but wanted to do it on my own.... So, I done some research, posted a thread here, and finally decided on the components I was going to use.... I purchased everything from Newegg.com, and when everything finally came, I put it aside, read all the manuals, and decided that I would give it a go when I was on vacation (Last Friday-Today). Sat. morning I cleared off the kitchen table, and went to town.

The build went great..... I took my time, and everything went like clockwork. When it was time to install the hard drive, I noticed that I didn't have another IDE cable, so after checking my motherboard manual, I decided I would go with the SATA adapter and cable. Got it all taken care of, and decided that the build was now complete.

I hooked it up to the monitor, fired it up, and was very pleased to see all the fans working properly, etc. I begin setting the bios (the only thing I really changed was the clock setting), and was finally ready to load XP Home Edition. Put the disk in, and got an error "Hard Drive not detected" ---- Hmmmm, back to the manuals..... Okay, I gotta hit F6 and install the driver that came on a floppy with my mobo.... There are four drivers, wonder which one I need? Couldn't find an answer to this anywhere, so I just picked one, and XP finally started loading..... It was a great moment!

When XP got the the point where it had to restart the pc, I was prompted to remove the floppy, and XP would resume loading when pc restarted..... Okay, pc restarts, and set-up started back from the very beginning..... This is odd, uh oh, Hard Drive not detected error again..... Perhaps I loaded the incorrect driver (there were 4) so I continued to try the other two that were for XP, and had the same problem each time.....

I searched the manuals, microsoft's website, western digital's website, and here, but could not find an answer anywhere...... I was very frustrated, and finally decided to wait until Tues. (was out of town Sun. and Mon.) to resolve this issue..... I picked back up where I left off on Tues, and got nowhere. I FINALLY broke down and called Western Digital's tech support, give them all the information, and began describing to the kind lady what was happening..... When I got to the part where about the SATA connection, the kind lady says, "Uhhhh, you don't have a SATA compatible hard drive!" and I say, "Uhhhh, shot who??? My hard drive isn't SATA compatible???? Well, Ummmmmmm, NEVERMIND!"

So, a trip to my local pc store for an IDE cable, resolved what had been driving me CRAZY AS HELL for 3 days!

I REALLY hate to admit to that mistake, but like I said, I basically had no clue what I was doing when I started this, and it ended up being a very rewarding experience! I also learned to get my hard drive connection issues straight before hooking anything to them in the future! LMAO

Thanks again!

Nice job, and congrats on the new build.

Look at it this way, you'll never, ever make that mistake again. Sometimes learning the hard way is the best way.

Nice looking rig. Please list components. How does it run; benchies and games? Once you build, you understand :)

Components:

Antec Sonota Case

Amd Athlon XP 2800 Barton Processor (Heatsink and Fan included)

ABIT NF7-S Motherboard

ABIT ATI Radeon 9200SE Video Card

Western Digital WD800JB 80 GIG Hard Drive

Mushkin 512MB PC3500 Single Stick Ram

NEC ND-2500A CD/DVD RW

Lite-On XJ-HD166 16X CD/DVD ROM

Sony 1.44MB Floppy Drive

NEC/Mitsubishi Superbright Diamondtron Monitor

Logitech Cordless MX Duo Keyboard/Mouse (MX700)

Logitech Z640 5.1 Speakers

That about sums it up..... Also picked up a Linksys BEFSR41 Broadband Router, and a Motorola SB5100 Cable Modem.

As far as how it runs..... Well, to be honest, I haven't spent much time on it yet..... It will be later this week before Comcast can hook up my cable access (NEVER, not one time, been on a computer with a broadband connection...... Too far from town to get local DSL, and cable just became available. Been on this machine with crappy dial up for four years..... Cannot wait to get the cable hooked up!!!!!) so I really haven't had much reason to be on it...... I have an Epson scanner I plan on hooking up to it, and am going sometime this week to pick up a new printer. What time I have spent on it has been fantastic! Everything runs/loads VERY quickly.... All in all, I couldn't be happier!

Just a couple more quick questions if you folks don't mind.....

First, how would I check the operating temperature now that XP is loaded?

And

About Antivirus/Firewall software..... I have been doing a LOT of reading on the subject, and am thoroughly confused...... I was planning on going with Norton Internet Security 2004 from a local retailer, but it appears this program isn't getting the best reviews.... So, I run across a bundle for Sygate Firewall with Panda Antivirus software..... These two get good reviews, so I suppose that is what I will go with..... Question is, the bundle can only be downloaded online, and I understand a firewall is an absolute must with a broadband connection (I know my router serves as a hardware firewall), so will it be okay if as soon as I get cable access hooked up if I go directly to the site and download the Firewall/AV software right then, or should it be on the pc before cable access is hooked up?

Again, thanks so much for everything!

Great job.

I learned how to build from Anantech forums as well. That was quite a few builds ago. :)

Nice rig!

As long as the Linksys is between your cable modem and your PC, you can go ahead and go online without being a total sitting duck for the Sasser worms and such, but a software firewall is still a good idea, and ZoneAlarm's free basic one is good, so keep that in mind. If you qualify for the Grisoft AVG Free Edition antivirus software (see license terms), it's got a pretty good reputation around here too. ZoneAlarm basic and AVG Free Edition. Gotta like good + free + legal software... :)

Be aware that there is also (get this) a vulnerability in the Linksys BEFSR41, so go and get the updated firmware for yours here.
