I have been lurking pretty heavy for about a week. I ordered the following system after having my P4 2.8 northwood for 1.5 years or so.

ASUS Premium board with heat pipes
AMD64 X2 4400+
Antec BLK2650 BQE case (matches server case on my desk)
Antec 430 or 480 True Power 2.0 PS
basic fanles ASUS 128 meg Vid card.

Bringing over:
Seagate 250 7200.8
Zalman ALcu 7000B
memorex DVD dual layer DVD burner

I need quiet computers. So, that dictated my choice of motherboard. I have never had a vid card fan or MB fan.

I will not over clock, and just use the computer for business, but wanted smooth multi-tasking and readd ONLY good things about the 4400+

So, I am sure this will be a learning experience. Silent and FAST is the goal. Would love to slap a Samsung 16gig FLASH drive in there when they come out soon :)))

I like the AMD cooler chip, never did go Prescott. Too hot.

I have a sedrver in the same case and even with stock power supply, it is SILENT. Has a Zalman on a P4 2.4 Northwood. Just sits there for web backup, does not need much power.

I am pleased to be aboard these excellent forums, been a fan of Anand since his VERY early days!

I have Ballastic ram I would like to bring over, anyone know if that would work in the ASUS board?

Thanks,

Dave

Have you considered going for the antec smartpower power supply, they are the newer version of the truepower (and are apparently quieter).

Hmmm, maybe that is the one I mean. I like the one with the single 120mm fan! I also have an orange Nexus fan in my same case I have now and that puppy is wicked silett! I will have to get another one of those, for sure. Dave

Hah. No.

The Smartpower is only good if you need a decent power supply for cheap. They use modular cables which are unreliable and have dual fans which are loud. If you need reliable quiet power, get a Truepower II or a Seasonic S-12.

My mistake, didn't see the 2.0 after the truepower.

You can also get aftermarket VGA heatsinks for a lot of cards out there if you can't find a fanless one that you like:

zalman zm80d
thermaltake cl-g0003
be quiet! polar freezer (depending on where you live)

I ended up doing this instead of hunting for the exact VGA card I wanted, ended up being cheaper in the end and the temperature should be okay (I got the g0003).

I ended up getting an ASUS fanless 128 meg PCI-E card. I cannot wait to try it! May be building system this weekend. I am also very interested to try the STOCK AMD heatsink/fan. It has heat pipes! I just hope it is quiet.
