I was looking at egg's mobos, and I came across this one and the "AM3+" caught my eye, next to the chipset on the mobo.

Is this the case of, A) MSI will be using the same mobo but different chipset / socket, or B) they know something we don't ?

Interesting. No new CPUs on the official support list (yet), though. The product page doesn't indicate anything about supporting AM3+, either, unless I missed it.

I guess MSI started marketing them as AM3+ CPU compatible when AMD announced that BD would be compatible with AM3 sockets.

That is what I thought at first, but this board just came out...

NDA for AM3+ is lifted on .. hmm.. sometime in Q2.

Where did you read that?

I was under the impression that AM3 CPUs would be forward compatible with AM3+, but AM3+ would not be backward compatible with AM3.

You are right.. I was referring to when AMD first announced the roadmap in 2009. Although, they officially announced later in 2010.. that is not going to be the case.

n 2011 we get Bulldozer and it comes in the form of the Zambezi CPU (AMD’s codenames are such fun). You’ll see four and eight core versions of Zambezi. Both will support DDR3 and both will work in Socket-AM3. Obviously guaranteeing motherboard support this early in the game is difficult, but AMD is usually good about maintaining socket compatibility. You may be able to slip a Zambezi into your current day Socket-AM3 motherboards.

I wonder if it's the same PCB they'll be using, but AM3+ CPU's will need the AM3+ chipset.

Still, if AM3 boards can really support AM3+ CPU's, that'd be great for current AM3 motherboard owners!

I saw a Youtube video from a recent Computer show where MSI was showing off an AM3+ mobo, perhaps this is it? Sure looks like it. I'm not sure AM3+ needs an updated Chipset, probably just needs the proper BIOS. I'm sure a new Chipset will be introduced, but like with AM3 an older Chipset will probably work fine, it just might miss out on some features and/or improvements.

That zoom feature on MSIs site is pretty cool.

This is actually one of the main reasons im pissed off at AMD at the moment, i bought 2 AM3 systems with the intent of having BD as a upgrade path. Yeah having to buy a whole new system a few years later is not a huge deal now i will just wait for DDR4 anyways. Being lied to though is a big deal. A company like AMD which is barely holding on cant afford to piss off its current buyers, they really should have made BD work on AM3 just to keep the promise, then released a respin a few months later on a new platform(AM3+).

At least with intel you know you have to buy a new platform going in, that the current platform will be short lived. They dont tell you to buy current platform then screw you over a year later.

My guess is somebody uploaded the wrong image. I really wish I could get a nice AM3+ board now, I want to swap out my motherboard anyway, but it seems like a waste of money buying another AM3 board now that there is almost zero chance of any new AM3 CPUs coming out...

If AM3+ needs a BIOS update on existing AM3 chipsets, and not a new chipset, then that settles the BD vs. SB debate for me before either is available.

I believe there's a physical Socket difference. So it's not just a BIOS update.

Just by the looks of it, I see just 1 pin more than what AM3 has. Its has 942 pins vs 941(AM3)..

It's not just the amount of Pins, but the wiring of them too. I'm not even sure if current AM3 uses every Pin.

Oh.. yes that is true. My point is.. there is no way one can install an AM3+ chip on AM3 socket without removing that extra pin.

Remember that Tom's dumb experiment of trying to boot a AM2+ CPU on a AM3 socket?

Newegg lists it as only being AM3. I wish there were AM3+ ready MB's ready to go. If there were I would more than likely take back my i5 2500k and P67 and get the AM3+ and a cheap Athlon II x4 for now and upgrade to BD later this year.

I wouldn't look to far into this. When I had my P67S-C43, USB 3.0 was printed on the PCB even though the NEC chip wasn't present. They were just sharing PCBs between different models. So basically, this is good news for the future but probably nothing for now.

I read something the other day that the BD just can't work with the existing chipsets. It was a goal but with what they wanted to do it wasn't possible. Or at least that is what the press release says. Given AMD's history and current market position I think that is probably the truth...they would have preserved socket/chipset compatibility if they could have. But of course old chips should work in AM3+...which would be OK if you could buy the boards now. :| I was thinking of building a phenom X2 system and wanted a board the could potentially support BD when it became available, but there isn't one out...which means I might as well just buy the cheapest AM3 board I can find. Hrrrmph.

Yea they said they tried but would have to give up to many features to keep it on the AM3 socket.

If you can wait another 2-3 months I THINK there may be some boards out. But only a guess based on what is out there now.
