First 7800GTX in a 15.4" laptop!

How did you get the heatsink in?
How cool or hot does it run at?
Difference in sound levels?

good article... but i would have liked to have seen some pics of the new heatsink being put in. were there any problems fitting it inside? any mods you had to do to make it fit etc?

I saw that a few days ago, it looks nice. Couple of questions:

It looks exactly the same layout and design as my X300. Can you confirm?
It looks like in the Dell you put it in, there are two fans with the one on the right being dedicated to the GPU. Any idea on wether this would work in a 6000 with the stock heatsink even though the pipe is a lot longer? I might have to clock down more ro something. I was looking for a Dell notebook with a X1600 or other future mid-range nVidia card to replace my X300 with, but if it will work with the 7800GTX, that would be kewl.

New heatsink being put in? The new heatsink is never used. You swap the heatsinks.

Take a picture of your X300 please, and we'll see.

The graphics card runs a bit hotter, especially after you clock it up. I just force the second fan to maximum for safety's sake.

"Once you have done so, switch the heatsinks between your old graphics card and the Go 7800GTX "

- but then you go on to say

"The soon-to-be-displaced Quadro 1400 256MB's heatsink, with metallic thermal pad on the side" - soon to be displaced by what? the new one with the heatpipes? why would it be deplaced if you were still going to use it 😕

YES!!!! I have that laptop. Now if only i could come up w/ the money to buy it.

Shadowmage, what laptop did u do the upgrade on? And where did u purchase the card?

here is what happens. The 7800 comes with a heatsink, and so does your old card on your laptop. THe heatsink on the 7800 DOES NOT fit into the 15 inch laptop. That is why you need to remove the 7800 heatsink, and replace it with the quadro heatsink.

see, i knew that it would not fit in the 15in laptop, thats why i was asking if he had to mod it or something. the wording he used in the guide was kind of confusing.

thanks for trying to clear it up
