First 2 College Themed TV&Movies (All Free On YouTube)

The juxtaposition between Dwayne Hickman and Bob Denver in that show is wild. Denver could have been plucked from a 90s/00s sitcom.

"Horse Feathers" is the first college movie with dialogue, the previous 2 were silent movies, the whole film isn't on YouTube but below is a clip:

Season 3 of Dobie Gillis is when the characters go to college, the previous seasons were first about highschool then the military.

'Maison Ikkoku' appears to be the first cartoon based in college, but there's no English version on YouTube, there's one in french but there's no subtitles.

I don't know how legal this is, but there you go. Not sure there is a source of the english subtitle version.

I don't remember which episode, but in 'Dobie Gillis' there was a man who said "I make $9000 a year"....

My first reaction was YOU POOR MISERABLE SOUL!

But then I looked it up and the average salary in 1959 was $5010 XD

I'm not a big fan of silent movies or musicals, and most of the first college movies I've researched were either silent movies or musicals.

I also prefer movies in color.

The first 2 College movies in color and isn't a silent movie or musical appears to be:

1. Mother Is a Freshman 1949 (Not On YouTube)
2. Take Care of My Little Girl 1951 (Is on YouTube)

ChatGPT says the average US salary in 1951 was $2000 to $2500 a year!

Can you imagine being payed 96 cents an hour and being like "IM FINANCIALLY SECURE!" 😁

I was looking for the book 'Tom Brown At Oxford' which ChatGPT says is the first college themed novel.

But on Amazon it says it was published in 2016 and has 358 pages.

Wikipedia says it was published in 1861 and has 599 pages.

Maybe ask it how much the average car, home, and college education cost was in ~1950 too for some perspective.

Here is a full audiobook of 'Tom Brown At Oxford' which ChatGPT says is the first book in the world based in college, I was going to buy the book but changed my mind when I found this video.

I no longer consider 'Maison Ikkoku' the first college themed cartoon TV series, the thing is, the main character is a college student but the whole series isn't about him going to college, it's about his shenanigans with his housemates who all are not even in college themselves, the main character is the only character that supposed to be a college student.

"Undergrads 2001" appears to be the first animated TV series where all the main characters are actually in college.

The first Japanese anime with all the main characters are in college is 'Genshiken 2004'.
