Did not find this posted anywhere. Hopefully this is the right forum.

Adding DVD-R/RW support to your NEC ND-6100A drive

Currently supplied as binaries suitable for flashing in DOS. The package includes original stock firmware, RPC1 with Rip Lock, and Rip Lock only. The patched version include the 6100 @ 6500 patch
Used firmware 2.23. You can DL the original firmware for the ND-6100A in case you want to roll back.

Successfully flashed the burner that came with the Dell Inspiron 8600 I ordered last week. :)

is this the 8x Dual Layer DVD+R/RW that they have been offering. I got in on the $750 deal, and saw Dual Layer 8X, and assumed it was Dual format also. Now I read my order a little closer its only +R, and at the moment I have a dual format 4x and a 4x DVD-R/RW. So you can guess all I have is -R media.

Update, the 6500a drive that shipped with my dell, will NOT do -R media. Does +R media just fine, but refuses to do -r Media. Some it doesn't recognize, some it burns, but the disk is a coaster....can't figure it out. The media does just fine in my sony 4x and my toshiba 4x drives....

when you flashed the drive on your 8600 what was it on? I have tried backing up my firmware, and I have tried both primary (master and slave) and sec (master and slave) and I can't figure out why it isn't writing the file .bin for back up....i run the exe and it just works for a sec, and returns to a new prompt. Same thing happened when I tried to flash the firmware without a backup...nothing tells it failed or succeded?

I have a 6500A, but I cannont burn -R media at all. I have tried forcing that 2.23 firmware from above link, but can't tell if I got flashed or not.

Use the winddows version, not the DOS (bin files). From this page.
Download the file named under "2.23 TDB windows flasher". Unzip and then run the 6500RPC1.EXE file. Upgraded the OS to Windows XP SP2

Thanks, seemed to work. I haven't burned, as I hate wasting DVD media just to try something. Gotta wait for some movies of mine to be crunched into divx.

The drive no longer clicks and goes crazy when I stick a -R disk in it....looks promising.

it seems that the 2.4 ver of the firmware is the newest, i haven't tried it myself, i guess i'll try it tonight and see,

update- it seems that when i burn a dvd-r everything is find for both 2.3 and 2.4, it works on cd rom drives, but i was using the rest of my dvd-r from when i used to have a dvd-rw, and it seems that there is a low quailty burn for the ps2 backups.

Mine came with 6500A and burns -R succefully.
Windows even shows +/- R in Device Manager listings.
I guess I am just lucky then. Don't have to flash mine.

Thanks for the tip, just flashed the 6100 which came with the 8600 from the 750 off deal. Worked like a charm.

Thanks SKORPIO. Just flashed a 5160 with a 6100A, with no worries. I was extremely perturbed after opening a new 50 pack of DVD-Rs to find that they didn't work with my new $750 off 5160! Really appreciate the info.

Anyone have any luck making a backup of the firmware? I'm using "nec6x00a -xxx -xxx -out BACKUP.BIN" and i've tried all combinations of -pri/sec & -mas/sla. I'm doing this from a DOS screen within WinXP SP2. If this fails can I restore the original firmware? Does NEC even offer the original firmware? I couldn't find it on their site.
