Firmware update problem with PS3

I've had the PS3 for about 15 months and use it primarily to play bluray movies. Over that time I've updated the firmware about 5 or 6 times without a problem but yesterday the updated would not complete or respond to my remote so I thought I'd bricked it. I did a little googling and youtubing and found the trick where you plug in a gamepad with the usb cable and that worked.

WTF would they program the update to ONLY respond to the gamepad and not the remote? I swear, way too many programmers are f'n lazy and fail to test more than a single way to do things. Was it not conceivable that someone might be usign the PS3 to play movies and thus use the remote instead of the gamepad?

Maybe, but this isn't the first time you've only be able to use the game pad to finish the installation because the remote wouldn't.

I have to agree with Pacfanweb. I can remember many times that I needed to connect a game pad via USB to finish an update. Of course, I've had my PS3 almost since launch.
