I was recently updating the firmware of my Pacific Digital (actually Lite-on) drive 40125s drive. I use MTKFLASH however whenever it starts updating it gets to "Bank 3" at 50%, then it freezes (or rather just doesn't do anything. When I restart and start up windows, it recognizes the Lite-on drive, but it won't open and there is a perpetual "WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH THIS BLANK CD" windows xp message untill I uninstall it. What can I do to deal with this? Thanks for any help!

well that "what u want to do w/ this cd" is default of course...and when u install nero, it becomes convenience...cuz it allows u to launch nero when u put in the CD..

so does ur drive work now after this?....if not, just revert back to the old firmware...i mean there's nothing wrong w/ that...i have a 40x lite on flashed to 48...drive got louder...and big wow...ooo....3-5 second difference in speed......negligible...i put it back to the old firmware....no more loud burning noise.....and no more coasters (i had 2 coasters out of 50 CD's.....i even heard some peopel's CD's cracked in the middle of 48X burning...heck no do i want CD shards all inside my drive...)

also, not too familiar w/ pacific digital...(i have a memorex..yeah lite on..hehehe) ..some manufacturers modify the original burner a bit...like the sony's..they're modified lite-ons...ahhahaha..well, good luck dude!

I would love to role back the firmware. How would I do this exactly? PD didn't give me a disc with the original firmware or anything on it (not that they should of, I don't think.. :) ). So how would I do this then? I just want to burn at that slow speed of 40%, no more, and not too much less. Thanks for the reply.

Well, when MTKFlash froze, did you just try re-flashing it again? Try an older firmware also if the one you are using doesn't work right.

I have tried it now with 3 different versions of the firmware for my drive. It always freezes at BANK3 50%. I even tried with a firmware for the "W" version of my drive (40125S by Pacific Digital), and that also froze at 50%. I'm stumped, and I don't think/hope my drive is dead. How can I put back the original ""original" firmware Thanks.

Ok, I moved the drive to another computer and tried to update the firmware again. THE SAME THING HAPPENED! it froze at Bank 3 50% again and again. I use different drivers, but the same thing happens. I don't understand why this should happen. What else can I do? Thanks for all the help sofar.

Sounds like there must be something wrong with the flash memory built into the drive, likely has a bad sector in bank 3.

Always flash with DMA disabled for your CDRW drive, if you're in Windows. You may try contacting Lite-On's tech support and requesting a DOS mode flasher.

This may not help, but who knows. I had a problem flashing the firmware on my Sony DRU500a. I would get error messages, and the flash would not complete, even after disabling DMA on the drive. It finally turned out to be a problem with the firmware updater and the VIA ide drivers. I put the drive on a promise ide controller, booted up, and flashed the firmware without problem. Don't even know if your using a VIA chipset or not, so a big YMMV on this one.
