Firmware hack upgrades Canon Digital Rebel Into A Pseudo-10D

From Slashdot

"When Canon introduced the Digital Rebel, the world's first entry-level Digital SLR camera, many remarked on its similarities to the 10D , its $500 more expensive big brother. In fact, the two cameras share much of the same technology and so Canon implemented a number of software-based limitations to avoid destroying sales of the professional-oriented 10D. Now, a new hack that restores a previously hidden menu along with a few additional tricks has added nearly all of those 10D features to the Rebel, with an arguably superior user interface to boot. Canon has so far said little on the hack but certainly cannot be happy with its potential effect on sales. This is, however, a reality that more corporations are having to confront. In an era where programming labour is relatively cheap and computer connectivity more frequent can artificial, marketing-driven, barriers between technology products, last?"

:D

Oh yeah, that's what I'm talkin' about.

Now I feel the uncontrollable urge to get a Rebel before they "fix" it........

I'm at the site now but don't see a link to the hack. Just says,

New Russian Firmware Hack (June 1, 2004)

But no link.

Not terribly surprising, that's VERY common.

On a lot of newer HP printers the only difference between model levels is a firmware DIMM.

All the equipment is there (motors, etc.), it's just disabled via firmware.

I'd love to get one but unfortunately I'd rather see a $0 balance on my credit cards.

A DSLR is definitely on my list of purchases in the next year or so though.

I have the firmware downloaded. I'm somewhat nervous to try it on a $1000 camera though

I was thinking the same thing for later this year (anniversary) since my wife's a bit of a shutter bug.

this was posted in the DP review forums a long time ago, and noone there wanted to try it, someone claimed that it worked and that you coud revert it to the origional firmwae eaisily if you ever needed serviseing, cause this voids your warrenty
