Firm Wear updates..

IGBT

Lifer
Wondering how important firm wear up dates are and do they effect the surround decoder functions? That is..do the decoders require firm wear up dates to stay current and do they maintain backward compatibility?? Some manufactures are inconsistent in their support for network connected devices and or require users to preform risky USB updates from downloads thus risk "bricking" their components.Yamaha has no less then two different USB procedures and are different from the owners manual procedure. Local Yamaha Warranty Center advised me NOT to update firmware on my HTR 7065 due to different chips used throughout manufacturing resulting in firm wear "errors" upon updating or flat out "bricking" the receiver. Any thoughts on this??

I try to abide by the rule of "if it ain't broke- don't try to fix it" when speaking of firmware updates. If a given update is not adding some crucial missing functionality or fix a bug that is adversely affecting you- skip it.
I do not know of any issue where updating breaks or removes functionality in an AVR, but then again I never updated mine.
(I do, however, feel that if they put out an update they should do their due diligence to make sure they work properly...)

I've had the Yamaha HTR 7065 in my network and it shows up in system properties and internet radio works. First indication of an anomaly is when I found out about rev.1.96 but it won't download to the receiver thus the USB procedure and risking "bricking" the unit. Still wondering if the updates effect the surround decoders and forward / reverse compatibility.

it depends on the avr and setup
if you have a 7, 9 or 11 amp avr you can run 5.x.y
where x is the number of subs your amp supports and y is the standard 5 channel + atmos channels.

some avrs have preouts to add more channels above what they support.

Hmm this is the first I hear of not doing all of the firmware updates on AVRs. My Marantz just warns me a new update is available and does it on it's own without me having to plug in anything to usb. When I got the DTS:X update in Sept it was as hassle free as it could be.

i have mixed feelings on firmware updates

my samsung tv lost its ARC compatibility with one

got a new one out i need to install to see if it fixes it

I've checked with two Yamaha warranty service centers and they both advised me not to do the USB flash due to procedure problems and or corrupt files. There is no going back if it fails. Yamaha has to be the worst of the worst when it comes to network support of so called "network" AV receivers.

hhmmm denon has a reset option via buttons that forces a usb flash, maybe yamaha should take notes

Everything I'm hearing indicates every manufacturer of Network AV receivers / preamps have solid network support for their equipment except Yamaha. Their USB procedure differs from the owner manual procedure and have two procedures out in the wild. It's resulted in a pile of "bricked" AV receivers.

I don't get where all of a sudden Yamaha is the best of the bunch. I have owned a couple of Yamahas in the past and honestly they don't hold a candle to my current Marantz.

Ohh and my Marantz has a backup fail-safe firmware when it does it's own updates. If anything fails during the process it reverts back to the old firmware so it's kind of hard to brick itself.

Marantz may be my next AV device purchase. I need a AV surround preamp. I don't need the built in power amps because I have separate front / rear / dialog amps. Is there such a Marantz product??

Yeah they make preamps but they are more expensive than the AVRs weirdly.

I have an SR5010 that I use as only a preamp. All my amps are crown XLS. I got the unit at accessories4less with a 3 year warranty for a refurbished unit.

Just because they are part of the same main umbrella doesn't mean they are built the same and they are not. This has already been covered before that a Denon and Marantz are not the same thing internally.

Costco agreed to take my Yamaha 7065 back due to Yamaha dropping network support for the firmware updates. Apparently I'm not the first costco customer to return their HTR 7065.
