Can anyone share knowledge, experience, etc. on the better way to connect?

depends on what you want to connect and why. For example, Firewire is best if you want to capture DV video. USB 2.0 is fine for just raw data transfer. Different products use either one more or less interchangeably, like external hard drives, but USB is more widely available.

Firewire offers faster sustained data transfer & uses less CPU overhead, plus it supplies a lot more electrical power which can operate some camcorders without an additional AC connection.

FireWire 1394 = 400 Mbps
USB 2.0 = 480 Mbps
1394b = 800 Mbps
In general, 1394 handles media files needing high bandwidth better than USB.
