Firewire question

Is there any way to add firewire to a laptop that does not have a firewire port built in and does not have an expansion slot for a PCMCI or whatever they are now card?

From what I have read in the past there is no way of adding a firewire port to a laptop that has no pcmi port. There is however a solution, a company called Pinnacle makes a product which connects to a computer through a USB port. It has various inputs including audio and firewire.

yea ive seen that thing however it looks to be mostly aimed at people doing video stuff. im not sure that will work for what i want.

i figured there was no way but i was asked at work.

the prob with those hubs is that you need a FW port on the comp in order to use the FW on it, they dont cross FW into USB

What exactly are you trying to do with the firewire connection, maybe it will help us figure out a solution?

connect some stuff that only runs over firewire. and no the laptop does not have a mini pcie slot that i am aware of.

think we decided to just fine an older desktop and put in an addin card. we just had this new laptop so someone asked if it would work

That opens another option if you need to acess the FW from the laptop. Use something like LOGMEIN to link the laptop to the desktop that has the FW.

Since your not doing video editing, wouldn't a simple USB/Firewire cable with the needed software do the trick?
